Katie was standing outside the door of The Brew, taking a break, when Lori walked by. She greeted Lori cheerfully, happy to see her.
âHello again! Popping in for another bowl of onion soup?â
Lori smiled and shook her head. âMaybe later. In the meantime, Iâve just come from the dry cleaners, and Mrs. Fraser gave me these.â She held out the laundry packet. âShe says they belong to one of the women at the circus, so I thought maybe you might recognize them. Iâm sure you guys must share a washing line or laundromat on occasion.â
Katie opened the packet and peeked inside. âNope, they arenât mine. And I donât recognize them as belonging to anyone else at the circus. Youâre right, we sometimes wash together, so I know what everyone wears. Was she sure these belonged to one of us?â
âShe seemed very certain, yes. She says these got mixed up because theyâre without labels. Anyway, would you mind asking around?â
âWith pleasure, Iâll do that. There are only six girls with the circus, and these look too tiny to fit Sandy the ticket lady or the two assistants, but Iâll ask around anyway,â Katie said. She frowned. âVery strange, because we had a seamstress label all our clothing a few months ago. Maybe these are new. Thanks for dropping it off.â
âI hear they found one of your dadâs knives in Orpheusâ caravan,â Lori said, wanting to hear Katieâs take on it. âChief Lambert at the police station was keen to talk to you about it.â
âVery strange. I donât understand what happened,â Katie said, shrugging. âDad is very protective over his knives and always locks them away whenever heâs not performing or practicing. Two days ago, he told me that one of them was missing and that because of Rexâs murder, he was going to report it to the police. Itâs not like him to be so negligent, but then he has been acting strangely lately. Besides, who wouldâve believed Orpheus could be so ruthless and savage?â
Lori pondered what Katie was saying. She wished she couldâve spoken to Orpheus and discovered for herself what he was really like. Sure, people killed for money, but not usually in this kind of way. Rexâs murder was the stuff of serial killers and psychopaths. âBy the way, Iâm sorry if I put you on the spot when your Dad saw you sitting with me yesterday,â Lori said. "He seemed angry with you.â
âIt was nothing,â Katie said. âHe overreacted. Donât worry about it.â
Certain Katie wasnât telling the truth, Lori said goodbye to her and left to open the Wholesome. Sheâd helped a steady stream of customers by lunchtime and welcomed a break as she turned the sign on the door to âClosedâ and sat down behind the counter to have a sandwich and a cup of tea.
Sheâd just packed up and was ready to open again when she heard a knock on the door. At first, she ignored it â after all, the sign was quite clear,
