Chapter Eight

Tish rang. “I have all the paperwork finished,” she said. “So I’m off to Spain to visit Mum.”

“Tell her she’s my favourite auntie.”

“Your only auntie.”

“Point taken.” Maddie said. “Have a lovely time and I’ll carry on with the good work while you’re basking in the Spanish sunshine.”

Late that evening, Tish rang again. “Got here safely with only one tantrum. And that’s because Missy is missing.”

“Missy?”

“Nell’s favourite stuffed toy, a pink and grey rabbit. I can’t believe I didn’t pack her. Nell cuddles into her every time she goes to sleep. Any chance you can get her and send her over?”

“No prob, Tish,” Maddie said. “Poor little mite. Olivia had a teddy who was her constant companion. And I well remember the instances when Teddy was left behind somewhere. I know the problem only too well.”

“I’ll give you the code to get into the house.”

“I presume George is away?”

“You got it. He’s somewhere in the Far East, I think.”

“The code?”

“Mum’s birthday – all digits entered as single numbers. Easy-peasy and you’ll never forget it.”

“Okay, 21 October, 1943, so 2,1,1,0,1,9,4,3?”

“No, sorry, six numbers. Just 43 not 1943. It works for the gate and both front and back doors.”

“Got it. I’ll pop along tomorrow morning and get Missy into the post before lunch. Good luck with getting her to sleep in the meantime.”

“Mum’s singing to her right now. Fingers crossed.”
