Chapter Twenty
On the Sunday, Hannah and Sandy accompanied Katherine to the service in the cathedral. After this they went quickly in Sandyâs Morgan Roadster from Ely to Cambridge. They walked through the centre of Cambridge, which was busy that afternoon with people walking about laden with shopping bags. It looked like the shops in the Grand Arcade and around the market place had done well so far that Sunday.
They went across a bridge over the River Cam and headed along the Backs looking across at the magnificent Cambridge colleges as they walked. After they had headed through Queenâs Road, they set off to the nearby village of Grantchester. It was much quieter over this side of the Cam than in Cambridge city centre.
The early afternoon was pleasant and warm and as they walked into and through Grantchester Meadows, they kept close to the bank of the River Cam. They could see cows minding their own business on the meadows and it was amazing that within only a few hundred yards or so, the scene they were walking in could have been, and in fact was, in the middle of the English countryside. It could also have been a scene from centuries ago, unchanged over time but for the tarmac paths.
As they walked along, Hannah asked Sandy if she could rehearse her opening speech for court the next day. It was to be the first day of her trial of the arsonist, and although she was excited, she was very nervous.
Hannah, as if facing the jury, said aloud to him her opening speech.
Sandy clapped and gave Hannah a hug and a lingering kiss, which brought a cheer from a passing boat and a group who were punting, who had made it a lot further out of Cambridge than people punting usually managed. It was obvious to Sandy that Hannah was already, even in these very early stages of her career, an excellent barrister.
As they walked on, no one was swimming at the popular spot along Grantchester Meadows where children and families often swam on warmer days.
On reaching Grantchester, they went quickly, due to them running a little late, to the very old and wonderful Blue Ball Inn, where they had an excellent Sunday lunch.
A walk around the village followed their meal. Sandy told Hannah that he had read somewhere that more Nobel Prize winners lived in Grantchester than anywhere else in the world. Their walk included a look in and around the Church of St Andrew and St Mary, which features prominently in the ITV series Grantchester, based on the books by James Runcie. Both Sandy and Hannah were big fans of the TV series set in the 1950s. They particularly liked it as you saw scenes of Cambridge that they both recognised. Sandy told Hannah about his drink with Rich in the Eagle with his grandfathers, which brought a big smile to Hannahâs face â the pub was another regular place shown in the series.
They passed the house that the poet Rupert Brooke used to live in and was now owned by a very famous author.
