Chapter Eleven

As they walked to the car, Myrtle said, “You couldn’t have come up with a genuine excuse? ‘We have that thing we need to get to?’”

“I thought you’d catch on that Hiram was ready for us to go.”

Myrtle shook her head. “No, I was thinking about the case.”

They climbed into Miles’s black sedan. Miles said, “What conclusions did you come up with during your mulling?”

“Nothing too concrete. It does seem like Shay might have gotten irritated with Palmer for treating her like a charity case. That wouldn’t be fun for anyone.”

Miles drove away from the country club. “Plus there was that thing about the animals.”

“For heaven’s sake, Miles! You’re not being very coherent today. What thing about the animals are you referring to?”

Miles stopped at a stop sign and turned to look at Myrtle. “You remember. It was when we were visiting Shay and she was talking about how she worked at the animal shelter.”

“Ah. Yes. We asked if she had a bunch of rescues at her cottage and she indicated that Cash didn’t want any pets there. Hmm. You’re right—for someone like Shay, that would be very aggravating. But was it aggravating enough for Shay to hop in her car, follow Palmer under cloak of darkness, and murder her benefactor? It seems unlikely.”

“The whole thing seems unlikely,” said Miles. “Palmer was annoying. She was a do-gooder. She got on everyone’s nerves. But would you kill someone because she got on your nerves? I think it has more to do with the Bo’s Diner sale. Maybe somebody on the staff didn’t want to lose their job. Or maybe Bo got tired of Palmer’s pushiness and killed her on the spur of the moment.”

Myrtle considered this. “But that would mean Bo was skulking out in the parking lot.”

“Maybe Palmer and Bo drove up to the diner at the same time. That truck of Palmer’s is very recognizable. He might have walked over to see what she was there for. Then he struck her in a rage over the fact that she wouldn’t let the sale of the diner go.”

Myrtle tilted her head to one side. “But Bo? I’ve known him since he was in diapers. He’s the most laid-back person in that whole family. Now Bo’s grandfather, God bless his soul? He’d have murdered somebody in a skinny second just for looking at him the wrong way. I simply can’t picture Bo having done it. But I do hear what you’re saying—we’ve been talking about how Palmer’s death seems premeditated because she was followed to the diner very early in the morning. But Bo would have already been there so it could have been spontaneous.”

Miles pulled up to Myrtle’s house and she blinked at it as if surprised to find herself there. “I didn’t want to come back home. We need to keep investigating.”

“Shouldn’t we take a break? Maybe have some iced tea and watch the tape of Tomorrow’s Promise?”

Myrtle frowned at him. “You certainly are caught up in that storyline, Miles.
