Chapter Twelve

I couldn’t remember which of my friends had suggested that a visit to Jessica’s crime scene after closing hours was the best way to find the clues we needed. I did know it wasn’t me, and I’d voiced my concerns numerous times when they’d ambushed me after I’d returned to close the shop. Luckily, Grams had disappeared across the street to see Mattie again, so I didn’t have to worry about her involvement.

After feeding Barley and making sure he had plenty of water in his bowl, I’d spent another fifteen minutes rifling through my wardrobe to find the only black outfit I owned suitable for the reconnaissance mission Jade and Shawna had dreamed up. I wasn’t sure I agreed with their plan, but I couldn’t come up with an alternative idea and agreed to go along to make sure they didn’t get into any trouble.

It was nearing eleven at night by the time I reached Shawna and Jade’s apartment. The streets had been eerily vacant, the drive taking less time than usual. My arm muscles ached, and I’d developed a twitch in several of my fingers from the death grip I’d kept on the steering wheel. To say I was worried and overly stressed about visiting the cemetery was an understatement. I wanted to help Jessica, but none of us would do her any good if we all ended up going to jail in the process.

I’d barely raised my hand to knock on their door when Jade yanked it open. “Great, you’re here.” She tugged the sleeve of my sweatshirt and pulled me inside, then leaned forward, turning her head to scan the sidewalk in both directions.

Did she think I was being followed? “What are you doing?”

Her cheeks flushed a rosy pink. “Nothing.” She closed and locked the door, then swiped her hand through the air. “Did you bring Jessica with you?” Since I’d told her what happened when Jessica touched me, I assumed she was checking for a cold spot.

“No, but I sent her a text and told her to meet me here.”

“You can do that?” Shawna walked out of the bathroom braiding her hair, then securing it with a fabric-covered tie.

I rolled my eyes and shook my head. “Sure, I have a direct link to spirit central. Anyone else you want me to call?”

“How about your great-great uncle…what’s his face.” Shawna scowled and flipped the braid over her shoulder. “Howard, wasn’t it?”

Sometimes when I was nervous, like now, I had a tendency to be overly sarcastic. “Sorry, this whole being-able-to-talk-to-a-ghost-and-find-a-killer thing is making me a little crazy. And you know how I feel about going to the cemetery after dark.” Taking a tour during the day was one thing. Visiting the resting place of the dead in the twilight hours was another. My father had dragged me on way too many ghost-hunting tours. I was sure the time I’d spent traipsing through old abandoned houses and the occasional graveyard had traumatized me plenty.

“I know, but this isn’t like when we were in high school and someone…” Shawna shot Jade an accusatory glare.
