Natalie Wilkens had been a small woman in life. Sprawled across her kitchen floor, she seemed larger, which was the opposite of how Mac usually saw dead bodies. He’d been at far worse scenes than this one, but it was clear unnatural death had occurred here. The large dent in Natalie’s head made that obvious.

This wasn’t his investigation. He shouldn’t be on the scene, but he couldn’t refuse Desiree Marbury’s request for help. She was butting heads with Grassley, and the next most experienced officers were her own staff. Grassley wanted them all gone so he could “wrap things up and file murder charges.” McNamara wondered if the man had forgotten everything he’d ever learned about police work, or if he thought Marbury had.

“All we know from her injury and the blood splatter is that she hit her head on the corner of the kitchen island,” Marbury said to Grassley, enunciating each of her words slowly and carefully. “What we don’t know, yet, is if she was attacked, had a medical emergency, or fell accidentally.”

Grassley started to argue, but stopped when Tremaine Harper said, “Chief?”

Reflexively, McNamara turned from his inspection of the pantry and caught Grassley’s gaze before they both looked at Harper. The young PFC had been looking at Mac when he spoke and had to endure his boss’s sharp rebuke.

“Sorry, sir,” Harper said in a tired voice. “I wasn’t addressing either of you. I just recognized what this is.” He was on one knee, flashlight shining under an oak hutch.

Marbury reached Harper first and looked at the shiny gold star he’d found. They all saw Grassley’s hand fly to the collar of his uniform shirt.

“Lose something?” Marbury asked.

It got ugly after that.
