I HAVE PASSAGE ON A FREIGHTER

To EH, August 12, 1952

New York, New York

Dear Papa,

I have passage on a freighter now scheduled to leave on the 29th of this month, and since it will take me something over a month to get to Mombasa, I will probably hit the small rainy season right on the nose. I am still waiting for the old on my application for an immigrant’s visa, and, of course, there is a chance this might not come through in time for me to take the boat. I made the application for Kenya Colony rather than Tanganykca, after what you said about the Babati country, and because I think it would be easier to find a small, mixed crop farm a close enough to the big center of European settlement so that there would be a market for produce there instead of having to depend on the European prices for coffee and flax, which have made so many people go broke. I think your idea of going to see Mr. Percival very good, and I will go very easy on buying a place. From all I can learn, land prices are inflated in Kenya now, because of the large number of people who have gone out there since the War. This is a shame, for from what I have read about the unsteady rainfall and the locusts, it is not the Ideal farming country, to say nothing of the very long distances to any world markets.

We had a very nice visit with Gig, but we didn’t see Jane, who was away visiting her mother in Memphis. Gig seemed in good shape, still intent on being a doctor, and not at all self centered like he has been for the last few years. He is not all mixed up with the crazy element on the coast, but has a nice house, only a few blocks from the University. The family next door have two peacocks, and it was wonderful to hear that old noise at night again. Gig has also joined the ROTC, in an infantry outfit, so that he will have his commission when he graduates from college. I think he is having a pretty lonely fight with his trouble, especially at night, but he keeps it completely to himself, and I didn’t talk to him about it at all, especially since he goes to the doctor every week, and I know nothing about it.

We will be here in New York until my boat sails, and Henny will keep the apartment until the Fall, when she goes down to Key West to pick out the things to go to Africa, and then she will come out to meet me. I hope to have some sort of arrangement by then.

Tell Mary we are across from the American Orchid Society, if she wants any dope.

Much Love,

Mouse

Excuse stupid letter. Will do better next time.
