“You want to go for a drive?”

“Okay.”

Not sure why I came back here a second time. Or why she freaked out like she did earlier today, when I came by to give her that diary. Compulsion. I was compelled.

I swear there is something between us, and I am pretty certain that she feels it too. I knew if I came back that Ditra would leave with me. I knew. How do I suddenly feel like I know things?

I have no fucking idea where we’re going.

“I like your truck,” Ditra says to make small talk. And then tossing her gaze to the window, she adds, “Tennessee is so pretty this time of year.”

“It is.” Especially now, with all the color. Golden sun starting to set over rolling, green hills. A blue sky melting into purple and red, then orange, pink. Blonde hair and brown-sugar eyes next to me.

I breathe in deep as her intoxicating wildflower scent fills up the cab of my truck in a way I wasn’t prepared for. Could never have prepared for.

“Anyplace in particular you’d like to go?” I ask.

“I think I’m already where I’d like to go.”

I cast her a smirk. “Me, too.”

It’s not the destination, it’s the journey.

I look ahead at the road, but from the corner of my eye I notice her gazing at her reflection in the side mirror. She reaches a hand up to touch the pinker parts of her face. She turns her head at me at the exact moment I flick my eyes all the way over toward her, and we meet in a stare. Those wide, cinnamon eyes fall to her lap.

I chuckle under my breath, and reach for her hand, and she lets me, and then slowly, she raises her eyes to dance with mine again. They soften, and then roam, her head tilting a little to one side as she studies my face. And I let her.

“Do people ask how you got that?” Ditra inquires about my scar. It’s much bigger, and much older, and much uglier than hers. Hard not to bring it up seeing as it’s on the right side of my face that faces her in the passenger seat.

Jerking my gaze back onto the road, I answer, “Not usually.” My hand remains clasped over hers. She scoots those lush hips of hers a little bit closer so the reach is more comfortable.

“Is it rude to ask?”

“Would you care if someone asked you?” I grin.

“No. Well yes, maybe. I don’t know.” She smiles, too.

I chuckle softly. “You won’t need to get used to it either way.” I glance over at her again, briefly. “Those’ll go away. And even if they don’t…”

“Even if they don’t?”

“You’re beautiful.” My words tumble out before I can stop them.

A net of silence casts over us then, and for as long as it lasts, it isn’t uncomfortable.

“How’d you get yours?” Ditra pipes up.

“That’s a story for another day,” I sort-of answer. This time it’s me who reaches up to touch at my face, bringing her hand along too.
