BOWLING TIPS

FOOT FAULTS: WASIM AKRAM

I talked to Wasim Akram about boots, and how important they are for a bowler, especially a quick bowler. It cannot be understated. When a fast bowler lands his or her front foot in the delivery stride, the front foot will carry 15 times their body weight through it, all reverberating through the foot, the ankle, the knee, and the hip.

Needless to say, you need the right footwear to take account of that fact. Wasim, the great Pakistani left-armer, told me: ‘Some bowlers, like Imran Khan, Waqar Younis, Dennis Lillee, Jeff Thomson, Rodney Hogg, and others wore a heavy leather-soled boot, but I hated these style of boots, as I was quite light on my feet. I bowled in what we call half-spikes.

‘I carried three pairs of boots with me, but some bowlers would carry up to six pairs, slowly breaking them in at practice before using them in matches. But the major secret for me was that I wore three very thick socks on each foot. Socks are the key, and buy the best ones you can find.

‘Nowadays, a lot of bowlers cut a little hole in the boot over the big toe of the foot that lands in front in the delivery stride—in my case, the right toe. It alleviated a lot of pressure from my toe, and I did not lose too many toenails! Even though I did not strap my ankles, I think many bowlers should, particularly at practice.’
