“I’m going to try one more time to get Lucifer to give me any sort of idea about this,” I said. “He was pretty excited about the pregnancy. Maybe he’ll be willing to talk to me about the book if I don’t specifically mention it’s for the Antichrist problem.”

We’d walked back to our room and discussed which museum or what book we could be looking for, but the possibilities were endless. We had to dig deeper.

“Oh, speaking of Hell,” she said, “I tried to pop into Hell to see Hilly the other day, and I couldn’t.” She breathed deep and closed her eyes. “Yep. It’s like it’s closed off to me. I can’t get there now, either.”

“Let me try.” I held out my hand. She took it, and I tried to move us to Hell, to my home there, but she was right. I couldn’t go. “How odd.”

She pulled her hand back. “That’s what I thought. The only thing that’s changed is the baby. Something about the little one is blocked. Or else Lucifer has shut me out of Hell for some reason.”

“I’ll go find out,” I said. “About that and the book.” Lucifer had a library that rivaled the Library of Congress and what he didn’t have now, he’d read or it was on his reading list. If he didn’t know about it, it wasn’t made. But to tell even me would require a bargain or a debt I would have to pay later. And I’d never really found a way around it.

Lilith turned her body toward me and smiled. “Yeah, you do that. In the meantime, I’ll see if Eve has any ideas. Maybe I can get her to ask Uriel.”

She walked toward me, a small spot on her shirt. “You’ve dropped something on your top.”

When she looked down, she grimaced, then wrinkled her nose. “Oh, gross. I bet it’s some of that blowfly larvae.”

She yanked off the shirt and rushed to the closet. “I’ll meet you back here this evening,” she called as she went.

“Okay. Love you.” Before she could answer—or not—I disappeared. I didn’t even want to know if she answered. Except, I did. I just couldn’t think about it now.

The last time I came to Hell, I’d popped right into Lucifer’s throne room. Wasn’t a good idea to try that again, so I went to the closet like he would’ve wanted. After walking across the palace, I was a little more than aggravated to find him not in his throne room.

Damn it. He was always there in the middle of the day. This was the time he took audiences with his demon followers. Listened to their complaints. Punished them for complaining. His favorite time of day.

With a sigh, I closed the door to the chamber off the back of the throne room where we’d chatted before and headed down the impossibly long hallway toward his private wing. Along the way, I checked his conference room. Sometimes my brother had a burning need to be professional,
