Cerissa still had sixteen platinum coins left, and she meant to spend them. I understood her eagerness; the rush of gaining experience points and buying new powers was addictive. Another ten platinum— worth the same as a hundred gold— and she could buy two new spells.

Plus, it meant she didn’t mind splurging on me. She paid for a cozy room at the Riverwatch Inn, a quality spot a few streets up from the docks. I couldn’t decide: was the single room just a money-saving move, or did it mean something more? When I’d arrived in Borealis, I’d been too busy fleeing for my life to really think of Cerissa as anything more than my savior. We’d stumbled so quickly through the roguelock heist, then spending all our cash, then trying to help Bell, that we’d hardly had a minute to get to know each other until the lazy days on the river.

Her temper aside— and I was as much to blame for my big mouth— Cerissa had been a true and trustworthy friend from the minute we met. But I was starting to realize that it wasn’t only her friendship I was interested in. Under the sweet sun of Borealis her red hair shone like a jewel and her freckles became dark stars spattered across the bridge of her nose. In the blue moonlight her skin was like porcelain, her big purple eyes black pools of farthest space. Even her long elven ears had a sort of animal grace to them.

I was falling in love at the wrong time, because I was hatching a plan to do something very, very stupid.

“We need to know what they’re doing with Bell,” I said from my accustomed spot on the floor. Cerissa peeked over the footboard of the bed.

“I was just thinkin’ the same,” she said. “We should be able to find out in town square. They usually post up the day’s docket.” She hopped down from the bed. “There goes my nap, I guess. C’mon.”
