Chapter 12

Gwen and Evelyn were determined to find out more about Owen Bennett. Unfortunately, the only way to do that was to snoop through his cabin. It wouldn’t be easy, because the doors to the cabins could only be opened with the guest’s keycard or a master key. And if that wasn’t difficult enough, they also had no idea which cabin belonged to Owen.

“Maybe Finn can help us find out the cabin number,” Gwen suggested. “He seems to know a lot about the guests.”

Evelyn shrugged, though her eyes sparkled. “Maybe, but how would we even ask for it? If we tell him why we need it, he could give us a solid no. What if the captain or security officer finds out about what we’re up to?”

“So far, Finn seemed quite helpful and on board with our investigation,” Gwen said, encouraging her friend. “Sure, he wouldn’t just outright give it to us, but I think he could at least hint at it without getting in trouble with his job. I’m also not exactly comfortable finding a master key.”

“Let’s worry about that part later,” Evelyn said. “Okay, let’s go talk to Finn.”

Fortunately for them, Finn proved to be a trustworthy ally for their mission. After not-so-easily convincing him that it was for a good cause and they weren’t trying to sneak into anyone’s cabin or sabotage the cruise ship, Finn promised to look into the ship’s computer for them.

He was also clearly happy to see Evelyn again, and she seemed happy to flirt with him some more. Gwen didn’t think her friend was romantically interested in the bartender, but she seemed the sort that liked to flirt and have fun.

Finn was covering for someone in the restaurant on the upper deck today, so they waited for him there, taking an outside table by the restaurant. They watched him coming and going, serving different tables.

Gwen and Evelyn waited for him to be free, watching people around them enjoying the outdoor pool or eating and drinking in the restaurant. It was another blindingly bright and sunny day, which made Gwen wish she could’ve enjoyed the weather more. She still hadn’t been in any of the pools. Hadn’t even put her new bathing suit on.

Gwen couldn’t help but notice many people staring at her, or trying not to make it obvious they were watching her. She got the feeling that many people were starting to think of her as the main suspect in the murder. Many were taking photos of the ocean and the ship, and of each other, trying to make the most of their time on the cruise. There was clearly some tension in the air, and the death of Vincent Beaumont had changed the cruise for everyone, but Gwen guessed that most people were too self-involved to let it affect them too much. They were there to let loose and enjoy themselves, and that’s what they intended to do.

Gwen wasn’t a big fan of her phone, as she found it unnecessarily
