“Is there anything I can do for you, Sheriff?” Opal Earthly-Caraway asked as Alex strode through the door of the sheriff’s office twenty minutes later with Mom. “Anything at all?”

My heart lurched as Alex shook his head, grief still etched on his face. “No, thank you. I just want to focus on finding Zoie.”

“Of course, Sheriff.” She handed him a stack of papers. “These are calls I’ve already taken from citizens. They’re reporting in every ten minutes.”

Alex stopped…stared down at the papers in his hands…then glanced back up at Opal. “How long have I been gone?”

Opal smiled. “Not even half an hour, Sheriff. But all the covens are on alert and are performing spells to help find Zoie. Also, the dragon shifters, wyverns, birds, gargoyles, and all other flying supernaturals are in the sky.”

Alex pressed his lips together, blinked rapidly, and nodded. “Yes. I saw them as I was flying in.” He cleared his throat and wiped his eyes. “Thank you, Opal. You’re a true blessing.”

A tear fell down Opal’s cheek. “It wasn’t just me, Sheriff. Everyone here is doing what they can. We’ll find her, Alex. Don’t worry.”

“I know,” he whispered.

When his haunted gaze met mine, I held my breath. But when he opened his arms to me, relief coursed through me, and I catapulted myself at him. I’d been afraid he might push me away in his time of grief.

“We’ll find her,” I whispered against his neck. “I promise.”

I felt him nod. “I know. Thank you.”

I stepped back and gave Mom a quick hug. “Were you home or in Black Forest visiting Dad?”

“I was actually home,” Mom said. “But your father knows. Alex stopped in real quick to let him know what’s happened. Your father was organizing the woodland animals when we flew out of Black Forest.” She sniffed and wiped delicately at her nose. “Zoie’s strong, Shayla. She’ll be okay.”

I nodded.

Alex strode over to where Grant, Needles, Deputy Sparks, and the former Sheriff Hawkins all stood leaning over a large map on Grant’s desk.

“I tried to do a locator spell,” Mom said, shaking her head. “I can’t get anything.”

“GiGi and Aunt Starla are constantly checking too.” I led her over to where GiGi, Aunt Starla, Serena, and Tamara all sat fussing over the twins and talking on their phones to the various covens.

“If we can’t locate her,” Mom said, “does that mean whoever has her can do magic? Or do you think they’re drugging Zoie so she can’t shift or wield her own magic?”

I shrugged. “I don’t know. The information we got from PADA regarding the Strausburg family said the mother and father were both gargoyles. That was it. No other supernatural…so I can’t imagine the kids have magical abilities, since their parents probably didn’t. They must be using a suppression spell of some kind on Zoie.”

“A powerful one,” GiGi said. “We haven’t been able to get even a hint of where they might be holding Zoie.”

“Alex said there was blood at the scene,” Mom said.

I nodded. “Yes.
