As Olivia drove home along the creek, she saw a team of tractors baling hay in the patchwork of fields on the opposite bank. The farmers were obviously making the most of the good weather to harvest their first cut of hay. And with this sunshine, it would be baked to perfection. Her thoughts automatically turned to Jago silaging and then to his note and her mood plummeted.

The police were no closer to finding Agnes’s killer and Olivia didn’t know what Jago was playing at. And now there was another unidentified victim. A curious mixture of loss, longing and frustration spread through Olivia, which by the time she’d parked up at Tresillian had been overtaken by a sense of annoyance and the niggling feeling that it was in her power to do something about it.

‘Oh, sod it,’ she muttered as she slammed the boot door closed after the dogs and ushered them into the cool of the house. They flopped down on the flagstones in the hall, and watched her lazily as she made her way up the stairs. By the time she came back down, five minutes later, they were snoozing happily. Zennor opened one eye and if she noticed that Olivia was in her running gear she pretended not to. It was too hot for dogs to be out in this heat anyway. She dropped a kiss on each shaggy head and promised to take them out later, when it was cooler. Zennor closed her eye and Mylor let out a gentle snore, already chasing rabbits in his sleep.

Olivia headed towards the coastal path, running at a steady pace that let her mind and body relax and her senses take in everything around her. The vibrant golden flowers of the gorse bushes and their tropical coconut scent mingled with the salty ocean air, and the harmonious calling of birdsong from the trees on the headland filtered everything else out. Within minutes she could feel the healing power the coastal paths always gave her.

As she began to relax and let her thoughts float across her mind, Jago’s face appeared, centre stage, with his lop-sided smile that always melted her heart. A sudden sense of desolation mixed with anger swept through her and she instinctively stepped up her pace. What she needed was a hard, long steep run until the pain in her lungs and leg muscles was unbearable and her mind couldn’t think of anything but breathing.

It was a distraction technique she’d used since the death of her brother. All these years later, she still ran every day. Sometimes she would drive over to the Atlantic coast to her favourite expanse of beach to stretch her legs, fill her lungs with fresh ocean air and let the dogs savage clumps of seaweed to their hearts’ content. At other times she could be found pounding the woodland trails round the station, or the coastal paths that went on for miles and really put her legs to the test. Today was one of those days.
