“How’s everything going?” I asked Pepper Hollis. “You holding up okay?”

We were both standing at the window, watching Tommy, Needles, Jacob, and Mia put up a tent outside in the front yard. Tommy looked to be in his element, laughing and showing Jacob where to strike the hammer. He was a lot more trusting than I, letting a kid near his hand with a hammer.

“I told him again he didn’t have to stay,” Pepper whispered. “But he insisted. He laughed and said no one would miss him for one night.”

“I would say he’s correct.”

Pepper turned and gave me a small smile. “I don’t know how to say this to you. Just know, I’m not running from the law, but I am running.”

I nodded. “I figured. You’re not the only woman on Enchanted Island who has come here for safety.”

Pepper’s eyes widened. “Really?”

“Really.”

Pepper crossed her arms over her chest, still facing me. “I was married.” She gave a harsh laugh. “Heck, maybe I still am? I don’t know. I let the ladies helping me escape take care of that. Truth is, I have no plans to ever marry again, so as long as he can’t find me, I don’t want to make any waves about my marital status.”

I nodded. “Okay.”

“As far as my husband goes…well, let’s just say it was tough in the house when it became apparent Jacob was a normal.” She closed her eyes, and a tear ran down her cheek. “But when Mia came along, and she showed tremendous magical abilities, it got even worse. At first, it was just the freezing out. He wanted nothing to do with Jacob. He had no time for him. But when the anger and violence started, that’s when I knew I had to take my children and run.” She cleared her throat. “My ex-husband was not only wealthy, but he was a prominent member of the town I lived in. He held a high-ranking position. It took a lot to secure what I needed to run. The fairies who helped me knew they would probably be targeted and incur his wrath, but they were willing to go that extra mile because they saw what he was doing.”

I placed my hand on her arm. “I got the impression Jacob was a normal, but I wasn’t sure. And being a normal is nothing to be ashamed of. In fact, I have a friend you might want to talk to. Until a week or two ago, she was a normal. She lived thirty-something years with no magical abilities. She’s getting married in a couple of weeks, but I’m sure if I give her your name and number, she’d love to talk with you.”

“So many questions running through my head.”

I laughed. “Yes, Devona has quite the story to tell. But it’s her story to tell.”

Pepper nodded. “Okay”

I caught sight of Jacob and Mia sprinting for the front door, Tommy and Needles trailing behind.

“Mom!” Jacob yelled as he pushed open the front door. “We’re done putting up the tent, and now we’re thirsty.
