Chapter 33
ALTHOUGH HIS CELL WAS burning a hole in his pocket, Gordon managed to ignore it during dinner. Angie had chosen Sadieâs Café, most likely because it was similar to Daily Bread. Service was efficient, friendly, and the staff seemed to know most of the customers. Greeted them by name, chatted while they took orders and brought the food.
Angie, he knew, was counting heads, watching the rate tables turned. He couldnât begrudge her investigative efforts. If they did end up moving here, sheâd be looking for work in food service. He doubted there was room for a second café, and he didnât think Angie would want to work for someone else at this point in her career.
âLetâs order different things,â Angie said. âI want to try the tomato and spinach soup, and thereâs a chicken with mushrooms and baby potatoes that looks good.â
Gordon perused the menu. âIâll try the chicken and dumpling soup. All the entrées are acceptable, so why donât you choose for me?â
She picked up her menu, and after a moment of lip-chewing, suggested he try the seafood combination platter. So, she was looking for ideas, not comparison shopping. He agreed, and the discussion revolved around food, Angie sampling everything and clearly trying to recreate the recipes in her mind.
He sampled a bite of his salmon, trying to discern the seasonings. Although he was Angieâs first taster when she was working on new recipes, he was basically a yea or nay opinion-giver. âYou know my palate is anything but sophisticated. The salmonâs good. Moist, tender, and maybe a touch of spice.â
Angie forked up a morsel, chewed, her expression thoughtful. âOld Bay,â she said.
âIs that good or bad?â
âItâs fine. Nothing fancy. A basic recipe, but youâre spot on about the cookage.â
They finished their meals, lingering over the bottle of wine theyâd ordered instead of coffee and dessert. When their server brought the check and Gordon was fishing out his credit card, Angie peered over her glass and asked her if there were any caterers in Pine Hills. âYou know, for parties or special events. Nothing fancy. Just different.â
Their server shook her head. âNot specifically. All the restaurants here will do take out, but itâs from our menus. Oh, I think Ashley will do special orders, decorate cakes and cupcakes, but thatâs about it. Are you having a party?â
Angie shook her head. âNo, just curious.â
That seemed to satisfy their server. She picked up Gordonâs card and hastened toward the counter.
âYouâre scouting,â Gordon said.
âOf course I am. Youâre going to your interview tomorrow to see if you want to move here. I have to gather my own data so I can make an informed decision.â
âSo we can make an informed decision. Youâre thinking of continuing with event planning without Megan?â
âDunno. Like I said, just gathering data so I can weigh options. Go ahead. Check your phone. I admire your restraint, but youâve been itching to see what Ed said.â
âItâll wait until we get back to our room. Right now, Iâm on vacation with my wife.
