Grey Wolfstein and his son were closing down their shop when Alex and I strolled inside. Needles had passed out in the backseat of the Blazer, so that’s where we left him.

“Welcome,” Grey called out. “I’d tell you to look around and let us know if you need help, but something tells me this isn’t a visit to look for appliances.”

Enchanted Appliances Plus was the only appliance store on the island as far as I knew, and Grey sold everything from new or used and enchanted or non-enchanted. For bakers and cooks like Serena, who had no need for an enchanted appliance, they could still get their needs met by buying non-enchanted. But for people like me, who could wield magic yet somehow couldn’t manage a simple meal, this store was a godsend. The store also came in handy for Normals or other supernaturals who couldn’t perform magic.

“I’m afraid this isn’t a social visit,” Alex said. “We need to talk to you about Charlotte Stoneman’s death.”

“Do you need me to stay as well?” Grey’s son asked.

Alex shook his head. “I don’t believe so.”

“I should get home to Gracie, then.” He clapped his hand on Grey’s shoulder. “See you in the morning, Dad.”

Grey nodded, watched his son exit behind a door at the back of the store, then shuffled out from behind the counter. “Such a shame. She was a beautiful spirit that Charlotte. Helpful and generous.”

“We’ve heard you were supposed to buy her building,” I said.

“Sure was. Still hoping to. Just not sure what’s gonna happen now, though.”

“Were you surprised when Charlotte offered to sell to you?” I asked.

Grey nodded. “Oh, yes. I approached her first, you see. About two weeks ago, when I heard she was leaving. I figured she’d turn me down, but instead, she said she needed some time to think about it. Then a few days back—I think it was Monday—she came over and said she’d like to sell to me.”

“But you have no idea what will happen now?” I asked.

Grey clucked his tongue. “Sure don’t. But, I figure if the building goes to Annaleigh, maybe she’d be willing to sell to me.”

Alex leaned against an oven, then jolted when it came to life and asked what needed to be made. “Sorry.” He stepped back from the range and shoved his hands in his pockets. “Had you heard or seen anyone threaten Charlotte recently?”

“Can’t say as I have. I know she’s had some problems with that ex-boyfriend of hers, and I once had to run him off a few months back when I caught him hanging out behind her alley. But other than that, I can’t recall anything recent.”

Alex nodded. “What about her relationship with Annaleigh?”

“Oh, they’re very close. Almost like sisters.”

“So,” Alex mused, “you never heard any fighting or anything like that?”

Grey’s eyebrows shot up. “Goodness, no. They got along well, from what I could tell.”

“Thank you for your time,” Alex said. “I think that’s all we have.”

“I sure hope you catch who did this to that poor girl.
