Chapter 31

GORDON SET THE PHONE bills down and saw the excitement on Gaubatz’s face. “You found Gilbert Sullivan?”

“What? Gilbert Sullivan?” Solomon said. “Like the guys who wrote the musicals?” He popped to his feet, marched in place for a few beats, and began reciting—or singing—something about a modern major general.

After a few stanzas, he sat, crimson-faced. “Sorry. I played that part in a high school production of Pirates of Penzance. Can’t believe I still remember it. Took me forever to get through it without my tongue tangling up. Did get a huge round of applause during curtain calls, though.”

“Never took you for a theater person, Solomon,” Gordon said.

Solomon ducked his head. “Mary Ellen played Mabel. I was hoping to play Frederic, but Bobby Wilkins got that part.”

“I take it Frederic and Mabel were a thing in the play?” Gaubatz said.

“Yeah. I got stuck playing her father instead. Bobby was a snob, and Mary Ellen helped me rehearse that damn patter song and ... the rest is history.” Solomon blew on his fingers and brushed them across his chest.

Gordon flapped a palm. “While I find all this fascinating, let’s save it for another time. What was it you discovered, Gaubatz?”

Gaubatz seemed to take another few seconds to change gears. “Right. I went through the DMV database using a range of years that should include our guy, and struck out. I mean, I had plenty of hits, but couldn’t match any to the guy at Finnegan’s. On a lark, I tried reversing the names, since they’re both either first or last names, and searched for Sullivan Gilbert. Not nearly as many hits there, and I found several possibles. I was over at Finnegan’s to ask Mick about it, and he gave me an eighty-percent possibility that one of them was Sullivan Gilbert. He paid cash, though, so no way to trace him through his credit card.”

“Good work,” Gordon said. “What did you find?”

“This is where we need one of those wall-sized screens so Gaubatz can click a remote and our guy shows up, along with everything there is to know about him,” Solomon said.

“In your dreams, Solomon. That’s one for your great-great grandchildren,” Gordon said.

“In lieu of our nonexistent jumbo screen, how about the PC at the duty officer’s desk?” Gaubatz moved across the room.

Solomon pushed away from his desk. “That’ll do.”

Gaubatz took a seat at the duty officer’s desk and logged in to the computer, then pulled up his DMV results for Sullivan Gilbert. Gordon found the picture of the man in question on his phone.

The search brought up a driver’s license giving a current address in Alamosa. DOB April 17, 1975. Did that make him an Aries? He’d have to look it up. He compared the picture on Gaubatz’s computer to the one on his phone. Close, he thought. He agreed with Mick’s eighty percent reliability. Facial recognition software would help, but he couldn’t see that budget item being approved in the near future. Mapleton was ranked in the top ten of the safest places to live in the US.
