Chapter 10
“You’ve had a busy week,” Mason said, locking the door behind us after he cleared the house.
“First I get a lead on the Jane Does, then kicked off the case, and then, to top all of that, my husband almost dies. I’d say that constitutes a crap week.”
“Well, if it’s any consolation, you got your wish. I’m not to let you out of my sight until forensics comes back on Donald’s gun, the one he used to kill Myrna. Looks like you’ll be working the Jane Doe case with me again.”
“I never intended to stop.” I smiled.
“You were going to defy Harrison’s orders?”
I slowed down the hall and glanced back. “His orders were to keep the trainees off the case. I’m not a trainee.”
I walked into the bedroom, grabbed my gun from the bedside table, and lifted my shirt to shove it into the waistband of my jeans. Grabbing a duffel bag, I packed West some things, including his weapons I hid in the secret compartments, and zipped it closed.
We stepped out of the townhouse, and my gaze went down the street in the direction of McGinty’s bar, where the bullet-riddled ghost I’d exiled was hovering. I tossed my bag into Mason’s SUV but didn’t climb in, instead heading in the direction of the scene of last night’s crime. I stopped at the mouth of the alleyway.
“I told you he was in over his head. Maybe next time you’ll listen to me,” Willard Smith, the mafia ghost, said.
“Cree, what are you doing?” Mason asked.
“Talking to Willard Smith, the crime boss I told you about. It seems this is his new lurking place.”
Mason glanced around, holding out his hand as if looking for proof. He was nowhere near where Willard was standing.
“You’re a fed?” Willard asked.
“Not quite,” I said, taking a step into the alleyway where broken glass littered the ground.
“Not quite, what?” Mason asked.
“Willard asked if I was a fed.” I squatted next to the glass and picked up a twig and moved the glass back together into its round shape. “Does that look like a camera lens?”
Mason squatted to my level. “I’m not sure, but I’ll have it collected.”
He rose and dialed a number, covering the receiver. “Tell Willard it’s not too late to tell us where he hid the money from the bank robbery.”
I turned my gaze to the ghost. No need to relay the message.
“They never could prove that was us.” Willard chuckled.
“You know they say you can’t take it to the grave with you,” I smirked, earning Willard’s glare. “Tell him where the money is and I’ll let you back in the house on one condition.”
“What’s that?” Willard asked.
“No more annoying me or moving things around. You stay out of our way, and I’ll stay out of yours.”
“A truce?” he asked.
I shrugged. “For now.”
“It’s not going to be easy to access,” Willard said.
“I’ll manage,” I said.
Willard started floating up the alley and stopped to turn back to me. “Come on, I’ll show you.”
“It’s nearby?” I gasped.
