Chapter 15

Mom was putting away the last of her lunch when Alex and I walked into her kitchen.

“Well, if this isn’t a wonderful surprise,” Mom said. “Can I get you guys some lunch? GiGi’s in the bathroom, but we just had soup and sandwiches.”

“Just sandwiches,” I said. “We need to get back to the station and collaborate with Grant.”

Sassy, the Papillon rescue now living with Mom, popped her head up from her dog bed. “Miss Shayla, it’s nice to see you again.” She pranced over to where I sat, her ears flapping like a butterfly. “I like it here. You were right. Did you bring Needles? I liked Needles.”

I chuckled at Sassy’s enthusiasm. “Needles is with Alex’s daughter. But I’ll tell him you said hi.”

“Thank you. Thank you. I better go rest up. Mom and I are playing catch in the backyard later.”

Sassy pranced back over to her bed, plopped down, and closed her eyes.

“So things are going well with Sassy?” I mused.

“She’s a great dog,” Mom said.

GiGi strolled into the kitchen, her eyes zeroing in on me. “You any closer to finding out who hurt Tamara and who had access to the Sleeping Beauty Spell?”

“Actually,” I said, “it’s worse than we originally thought.”

“Whaddya mean, Shayla?” GiGi demanded.

“I’m afraid I have some bad news,” I said. “It looks like someone killed Hildegard Broomington for her Shadows book that had the Sleeping Beauty Spell in it.”

“No!” Mom cried.

“This is terrible.” GiGi started to pace. “Someone killed Hildegard and the book containing the banned spell is gone too? What is happening to this island? We seem to have an increase in crime lately.”

“Crime happens everywhere,” Alex said. “It was only a matter of time before it took hold on Enchanted Island.”

“Still doesn’t make it easy to swallow,” GiGi growled.

“I agree,” Alex said kindly.

“How was she killed?” Mom asked. “Or can you tell us?”

Alex shook his head. “I can tell you that Hildegard was killed, and that Shayla and I are investigating. That’s about all I can divulge right now.”

Mom handed Alex and me each a sandwich. “So someone on the island has a powerful book in their possession. That book needs to be found quickly.”

“I agree,” I said. “We’re looking for it and a couple other things too.” I took a bite of my sandwich. “What can you two tell me about Wendy Wand? She seems to have a grudge against our family. Why is that?”

GiGi snorted. “The Wands have always wanted to yield more power on the island than they do. While they go back for generations, they aren’t original founding members. Unlike Wendy’s mom, who is part of the Wartski family and is a founding member. The Wands believe that association should yield them more power in the witch community.”

Mom handed me a bottled water. “Which is sort of what this big coven meeting coming up is going to address.”

“What’s that?” I asked. “What big coven meeting?”

“This whole mess with Tamara and the Sleeping Beauty Spell has caused quite a stir in the myriad covens on the island,” GiGi said.
