Kotor, Montenegro

When the Mystery of the Sea pulled into the famous Montenegrin port surrounded by mountains, Luka Broz knew deep down in his bones that something wasn’t right. They had gotten the video feed of the man pulling the cocaine out of the pallet, but after it was gone, they had no clue what had happened to the drugs.

After finally docking, Luka and his partner, Rina Kovac, had made sure to keep track of everything leaving the cruise ship. But Rina had been correct. What if the smugglers had divided the product into four or five packs and had crew members carry it off the ship?

Since Luka couldn’t get ahold of his counterpart with the Montenegro National Security Agency, he had been forced to contact the local Kotor police.

Now, standing in the hold that had housed the pallet with cocaine in it since it came aboard in Athens, Luka observed a woman speaking with a couple of uniformed police officers at the entrance to the storage facility.

“That must by our contact,” Luka said to Rina.

“She looks like she could snap your neck with her thighs,” Rina observed.

No doubt, he thought, as he watched the woman stride over to them.

The police woman reached her hand out first to Luka and said, “Police Inspector Bojana Maraš.” Then she shook hands with both Luka and Rina. “I understand the two of you work for the Croatian Security and Intelligence Agency. What does the SOA have for us?”

Luka took the lead. “We have been working with the Greek National Intelligence Service since before leaving port in Athens,” he said.

The police inspector shifted her eyes to Rina now and said, “And you are just involving us now?”

Rina said, “We have tried to contact your National Security Agency, but our contact has not answered the phone.”

“Plus,” Luka said, “we were undercover aboard this ship.”

“Tell me about your operation,” the police inspector demanded.

Luka glanced at Rina and then back to the gruff police inspector. He quickly told the woman about the tracking device and the small camera they had placed to track the cocaine.

“Yet,” the inspector said, “you still lost the cocaine.”

“Unfortunately, yes,” Luka said. “Sometime in the early morning hours. We got a hit from our motion sensor on our camera.”

Finally, the police inspector perked up. “So, you got video of the person who took the cocaine.”

Luka didn’t want to give this woman everything they knew, but he had no choice but to include her in this investigation. He and Rina had no police powers in Montenegro.

Pulling out his phone, Luka found the video and played it for the police inspector. Her eyebrows raised when she saw the large packages of cocaine come out of the pallet. She played the video again.

“You have a clear view of who moved the product,” she said. “We just need to identify that man. I noticed there was an electronic security lock on the entrance to this hold. With the timeline on the video, we should be able to easily identify this man.
