The Enchanted Island Hospital wasn’t your typical hospital. Instead of overworked doctors and nurses, harsh medicines, and depressing sterile rooms, ours was filled with witches and fairies who specialized in medicine and magic. The rooms were designed to fit the individual supernatural’s need. For instance, if you were a mermaid, your room was encased in floor-to-ceiling fish tanks with ocean waves pumping through the speakers. If you were a green witch, your room was filled with plants and herbs.

Seeing as how it was a Sunday, I wasn’t sure who would be working and available to talk. But luck was with us. The werewolf behind the information counter said the director of supernatural resources, Klaryssa Earthly, was in for the day.

Ten minutes later, Alex, Needles, and I were ushered into a spacious room illuminated by natural light. Klaryssa’s opulent desk held a new laptop and printer, but was also adorned with various crystals and rocks. Surrounding the room were floor-to-ceiling bookshelves. At a quick glance, I could see an eclectic mix of medical texts, fiction and non-fiction books, and ancient grimoires. Knickknacks like wands, candles, and family pictures were scattered among the books. In one corner was a plush armchair, potted plants, and more crystals on a small end table.

“Smells lovely in here,” I said as Alex and I sat across from her desk.

“My own special essential oil blend,” Klaryssa Earthly said sitting down.

“I have to ask.” I leaned in closer. “Are you related to Opal and Pearl?”

Klaryssa laughed. “I am. I’m their great-niece. Their younger brother was the only one to marry young and have children. I have two older brothers and one younger sister.” She winked at me. “Don’t tell The Greats I said this, but I’m taking after them and not marrying until I find just the right person.”

“The Greats,” I murmured. “I bet they love that.”

“Oh, it’s what they insist we call them.”

Needles made a hissing sound in my ear…his version of a laugh. “Maybe the gargoyle should start calling me Needles the Great!”

Alex turned his head and stared at Needles, not saying a word.

“But they love working for you, Sheriff,” Klaryssa said. “Well, okay. Opal loves working for you.”

Alex and I both laughed at that.

Klaryssa folded her hands in her lap, suddenly turning serious. “I assume this is about Dr. Lunamann’s death? I can’t tell you how upset we all are here at the hospital. When I heard the news around ten o’clock last night, I was just devastated. That’s why I came in today. I knew the staff and doctors would be upset. I have two grief counselors available for anyone who needs them.”

“Can you tell us if anyone was upset with Dr. Lunamann?” Alex asked. “Or had he been threatened recently?”

Klaryssa shook her head. “I don’t know of any staff or patient who was angry at Dr. Lunamann. Certainly nothing has come across my desk in the last month.”

“What about before that?” Alex pressed. “Anything stand out later than that?”

Klaryssa fidgeted in her seat. “Do you have someone specific in mind?”

Alex smiled.
