“Jimmy Crane will be halfway to America by now,” Fuller said when Jack arrived back at the station. “I had a word with his landlady and she told me that Jimmy found a job in the orchestra on the Empire Star cruise liner that left from Southampton on the 28th of June on its way to New York. So, unless Crane’s a bloody good swimmer, he’s not our man.”

“Fair enough. Scrub his name from the board. I want another word with Bunny Starling.”

“Are you off to London again?”

“No, not this time, but you and Myra are. I want you to go and fetch her back here. Take a car. Make it official.”

“Why? What’s she done?”

“She hasn’t been entirely forthcoming with me, Eddie, and there’s been enough pussyfooting around these bloody people. Bring her in for questioning and I’ll see if I can get some straight answers.”
