Chapter Eleven

Miles was right. “Terror on the Set” was the headline on two of the daily entertainment business television shows the next day, and, according to Corny, at least three websites devoted to celebrity gossip. Even a show business neophyte like I was knew that kind of thing didn’t happen by accident.

Mischief and Magic finished their scenes by midafternoon. Adrian told me, beaming proudly, that it looked as though they’d be able to use almost a full minute of the footage it had taken the dogs and me ten solid hours of hard work to shoot. But, he cautioned, I shouldn’t be too disappointed if a lot less than that made the final cut. The eventual decision would be made by the director when the whole film was shot, months from now.

You’d think that being on the set of a major motion picture—not to mention having my dogs actually featured in said motion picture—would be the highlight of my year, or at least my day. Not even close. The whole thing was a lot harder than I’d imagined. Mischief and Magic had fun doing their tricks for the cameras, even when the trick was something as simple as chasing a flying disc, but trying to keep them interested and entertained during the long down periods between takes was exhausting. The only thing that made me smile all day was the series of texts and photos from Melanie in Charleston. I sent back my own photo chronicle of Mischief and Magic doing their collective thing, with funny captions when I could think of them: Mischief with her head tilted inquisitively toward the camera saying You want me to do what? and Magic sound asleep saying Nice work if you can get it. That kind of thing.

We worked through lunch—which meant somebody ran back to the Craft Services tent and brought back a bunch of sandwiches that we ate when we could—so I didn’t have any idea how things were going with the rest of the filming after all the drama yesterday. At 3:00 somebody called, “Okay, that’s a wrap on the dogs.” And we all shuffled back to the van that would deposit us back at the compound. A couple of hefty guys loaded my equipment into my car while the dogs and I said good-bye to the crew. One thing about working with dogs: hardly anyone is ever in a bad mood. Adrian reminded me to stand by for a couple of weeks in case reshoots were needed, told me my check would be mailed from California within thirty days, and sent me on my way. I was looking forward to life getting back to my normal.

My pretty girls and I were walking back to the car when I saw Dallas walking down the path to her cabin. She had her phone to her ear and didn’t see me wave, so after a moment’s debate I veered away from the parking lot and took the shortcut across the dead winter lawn that led to the cabins.
