Chapter Eleven

In the morning, Caitlyn went back to the bike store. She noticed a sign in the front window as the owner was opening up.

“Give me a few minutes to get the lights turned on and…oh, it’s you,” he said. “Are you here as a customer or to waste my time again?”

“I don’t see any customers waiting for your help. Would it be easier to answer my questions at the police station?”

He gave her an insincere grin. “It probably would, yes. But since we’re already here, what do you want to know today?”

She took the pieces of athletic clothing retrieved from the dumpster the day before from a bag. They were wrapped individually in plastic evidence bags.

“Are these a cycling shirt and shorts?”

He looked at the wrapped shirt. “Something I sell. I got a rack of them over there. If you want to return them, you’ll need the receipt.”

“Not here to return them. These are evidence. Remember Dennis, the triathlete that bought the bike from you?”

“What about him?” he asked.

“I need to know if you ever saw him wearing these? Or maybe sold him these?”

“I’ve sold only one set of those, and it was to him. How does that make them evidence?”

“I found them in a dumpster outside the building where his body was found.”

“His body?” he asked.

“I didn’t mention the other day that he’s dead?”

“All you did was pump me for information.”

“I still have more pumping to do,” Caitlyn said. She repositioned the shorts inside their bag so the interior of them could be seen. “What’s the deal with this crotch?”

Once the lights had been turned on and the cash register was checked, the shop owner took a seat. “Cyclists like to have some extra cushion in the crotch, especially if they plan to ride long distances. Men have a nerve down there right where it counts, and if it gets too much vibration or pressure, things go numb. Important things, if you know what I mean.”

“Certainly don’t want that to happen,” Caitlyn said. “Is this outfit the usual thing triathletes wear?”

“Some still wear a separate shirt and shorts. Most triathletes wear a one piece thing like a woman’s swimsuit while competing so that they can swim, cycle, and run in. Kinda girly if you ask me, but I’m not the one racing. That padded crotch gets in the way of a smooth running stride, so once they’re done with the cycling portion of the race, they pull off those shorts and put on something else. But changing clothes only slows them down. The alternative is to ride without cushion. The one-piece singlet lets them get through transition areas faster. It’s just a matter of the level of discomfort they’re willing to tolerate while racing, just to save a minute or two in their overall time.”

“If they want to be comfortable, they have to change from a swimsuit to a bicycling outfit, to running shorts and shirt? But if they want the faster result, they just wear the singlet for the entire race?” she asked.
