Mel hadnât liked the anger that had filled her when she was in Antonâs presence. And it had only gotten worse since then.
She shook her head. âAnd what else?â she asked Quint.
The healer hesitated, clearing his throat and swallowing audibly. âYouâwellâyou ordered your grandmother to accept Blas Nunezâs challenge for Sapienti of the clan.â
Mel had absolutely no recollection of this. Of any of it.
How could I do something so dangerous?
She walked toward the table, set her hands upon its flat surface, and took several calming breaths. She wanted to upend the table. Throw the chairs across the room. Punch the wall with her fists. She wanted to scream in frustration and weep in anger.
Instead she pulled the gateway stone from her pocket. âIâll be traveling to Inter Spatium Caelum. I need to find answers. This canât wait any longer.â
âWait, Mel,â Quint said. He almost stopped when her gaze landed on him, but he powered through. âLet me get the First Healer. Weâll help you across. You shouldnât travel without our help, especially in your condition. It could cause you harm.â
My condition? she thought bitterly. But she agreed. âFine,â she said. âBut make it quick.â
As Quint sprinted off, Keven spoke. âWould you like me to go get Cori? Iâm sure sheâd come back.â
âNo,â Mel replied. Cori had gone to tend to clan duties, and although Mel was sure she would return right away if Mel asked, Cori had already spent the entire day with Mel, and Mel couldnât bring herself to monopolize any more of her time.
Quint arrived with the First Healer in tow. They both wore serious expressions as they prepared Mel to travel. Isis drew a glyph on Melâs forehead, then made a thick line in black paint down her chin to her throat.
âI canât talk you out of this?â the First Healer said as she worked. âItâs not exactly the best time. The challenge is in a few hours.â
âJust pull me out beforehand,â Mel said. âI need to be there. Iâm responsible for it, after all.â
She took off her boots and lay in bed. The First Healer pulled the covers over her. Mel held the stone in her hand and closed her eyes, imagining the forest she had seen before. The stone pulsed warmly in her hand as the two healers started chanting.
