The clouds on the western horizon blazed orange and pink when they reached the security booth at the marina. Monica, who had changed into a pair of white linen pants and a white halter-style top with blue trim, swiped a plastic card and waved at the guard as the turnstile opened. She guided Rory by the hand down a sloping ramp to the floating dock, past yachts of varying sizes. Roryâs best attempt at deck attire was a polo shirt, light gray slacks, and sneakers. Several of the floating residents of the marina were so large that they sported tiny two-passenger helicopters perched on their prows. Lights peeked out from water-level windows on a few and a party was loudly underway on a huge floating black bullet, but most of the opulent toys were dark.
Soft lights strung along wires ten feet off the ground all along the dock illuminated their path and cast a pale glow onto the placid water inside the artificial harbor. Monica turned down a small spur dock, then turned left and climbed a narrow metal gangplank to the deck of one of the smaller marina residents. The deck lights allowed Rory to see Couples Therapy painted in script letters just above the water line. He carefully followed Monica to the deck, holding onto a thin steel cord and pulling himself up the last step.
Monica switched on deck lights, including a string of bulbs running from stem to stern and another up the main mast. Rory scrutinized what he could see of the craft, impressed since he had never been on such a formidable private boat. But he could also see telltale signs of wear and age. Pits and gouges speckled the teak wood trim, puddles of dark stains marred the deck, and a dull film clung to what should have been shining chrome. The Couples Therapy was not in the same league as most of the other yachts in the marina, but nevertheless was a pearl befitting the wealthiest members of New York society. Rory thought Tomâs actual income did not rise to the yacht-owning strata, but he had no idea how much cash he had been reeling in as a player in the Northrup Investments embezzlement scheme.
âThis way,â Monica called out before disappearing down a large hatch at the stern into the interior of the floating condo.
Rory followed, carefully navigating the narrow wooden stairway into the belly of the Couples Therapy. In the hours since his emergency room visit, his nose had stopped throbbing. With the help of the pain meds, he was feeling better. He was also no longer actively bleeding.
Lights snapped on when Rory reached the bottom step, illuminating the well-appointed interior space. In front of him, a tiny kitchen lined both sides, which then billowed out into seating areas, including a bar and a table that Rory assumed could be folded down. He suspected the padded sofas on either side could be pulled out into beds. Monica opened a door at the far end, which led to the master suite.
