“The dragoness comes with me. The rest of you are horrible traitors.”

Wednesday, April 12, 2057

Lower North Lakes, Precinct 153

Cauldron City, Nebraska.

Chaos waited for me at work, and I regretted having come into the station. Janice, armed with a pair of crutches, intercepted me in the parking garage. I accepted the blow to my dignity in exchange for relief from the pain, thanked her, and went through the hassle of adjusting them to be the appropriate height. “Figure I’ll get hazard pay for this?”

“No,” everyone chorused, including Alicia.

My attempt to make use of my sad pony eyes ability while a human earned me a bunch of laughs and zero sympathy. Huffing over my failure to rein in my co-workers or the dragoness, I made use of the crutches and headed for the elevator, as I doubted I could handle going up the steps even if I wanted to. “The dragoness comes with me. The rest of you are horrible traitors.”

Wynonna laughed, patted my back, and beat me to the elevator, pressing the up button. “We’re just realists. The captain is feeling guilty over your foot, though, so expect some hovering. Dr. Erik should already be here, and he’ll check how much damage was actually done. Alicia, you’re also being seen, as the last thing we need is your grandfather razing the city. I happen to like living here.”

“As I seem to be living here until I learn to cook, I agree with you. I can’t promise my grandpappy won’t take the city over, but he doesn’t tend to destroy the places he’s ruling. It’s bad for business.”

The thought of the old black dragon taking over another city chilled me, and I shuddered at the realization if he ruled over Cauldron City, he might concoct a hundred and one reasons to pay me a visit. As he doted on his family, I’d have to deal with him often enough. Having the keys to his Black Wing would help to make coping with the visits easier.

While waiting for the elevator, I glared at my foot, cursing how the injury would realistically sideline me from driving until confident a stab of pain wouldn’t prevent me from maneuvering the vehicle safely.

“Realized you can’t drive with your foot like that?” Patricia asked.

Startled, I lifted my head to stare at her, widening my eyes. “How did you know?”

“A man only looks that despondent if the love of his life left him, he has a nice car he can’t drive, or the girl he wishes he could date is dating someone else. Or there’s a puppy he wasn’t allowed to pet, but that’s universal. Who wouldn’t become despondent under those circumstances?”

“I would be heartbroken for the rest of the day,” Alicia announced. “I heard there are K9s, but I’m guessing I’m not allowed to pet them.”

Wynonna snickered. “You can pet them. Later in the day, when the shifts are changing, I’ll run you down to the kennel and introduce you to some of the friendlier pooches. If the fuzzy little unicorn needs some quiet time to work, I can take you over to see the dogs in action.
