Chapter Nine

Turns out the code to unlock the door was Fergie’s birthday. I felt stupid for assuming Jax would have made it more complicated. But then my plan to use it again later was thwarted when Jax ordered Lester to change the code to “the second iteration.”

Whatever that meant.

At least, Lester would be easy to torture if I could find him again. All I had to do was threaten to withhold potty breaks.

I found Milo and sent him to keep an eye on the two sleeping Fergies I’d left behind. Then, we made our way downstairs.

We ended up in a room on the first floor of Hotel McGuire that Jax dubbed the “billiards room.” The minute he uttered the words to his security team, I just shook my head and sent him a questioning look.

“What?” he demanded as we made our way there.

“No one says billiards room anymore unless you’re one of the original Clue characters. Or Russell Brand.”

“Says the girl who still says ‘my bad’ when she makes a mistake.”

“Your accusation would imply I make mistakes.”

His brow lifted. “I have a feeling you’re about to use the phrase just as soon as you explain to me who this woman really is and how you know her.”

Damn.

Busted.

“I…” I winced.

He shook his head. “Come on.”

He was careful to keep his steps slow and measured to my own which I was glad for. As impatient as I was to get down there, these stitches weren’t making it easy.

When we arrived, I counted four security guys and Lester all standing guard over our visitor. I couldn’t blame them. We were all wondering how in the hell Starla had found us here.

This house was completely off the grid and spelled tighter than a Horcrux. We should have been undetectable, and yet, here Starla was on our doorstep like she’d just Google mapped our address. We needed to know how she’d done it. And if anyone else could do the same.

“…cauliflower rice tastes just like the real stuff after a while,” Lester was saying as we arrived. “Just give it a chance.”

“Gem.” Starla stood, smiling tightly as I stepped into the room.

I pressed my lips together. Starla was probably feeling tortured already.

“Starla, this is a surprise.”

She glanced pointedly at each of the men stationed around the room. “Yes, it looks like you’ve decided to throw a party over my arrival.”

I glanced at Jax, who merely lifted his chin and nodded at Lester and the others.

“That’s my cue,” Lester said and shuffled out with the others, adding, “I needed a potty break anyway.”

When they were gone, Starla cleared her throat and shot Jax a look. “I had hoped to speak to you in private,” she told me.

Jax didn’t budge.

I gestured around the room. “This is as private as it gets, I’m afraid. Consequence of being mortally wounded recently.”

Starla didn’t look surprised by my admission.

“Yes, I heard about your run-in with scorpion demons.”

“That was round one. Later, round two involved flying lizard demons and their Nephilim general. And I’m not sure run-in is the word I’d use,” I said wryly.
