Chapter 14

“Who?” Ada asked quietly.

“Private investigator, supposedly, looking into this case too.”

“And he just happens to be here, on the same path as you, less than fifteen minutes after someone pushed you into the ocean?” Ada’s voice sounded skeptical.

“My thoughts exactly,” I muttered as we approached the man. Seeing him in full daylight was different from last night, when he had been illuminated only by my phone’s flashlight.

Today, he wore a fitted polo shirt and a pair of slacks. His wavy hair still had that tousled look, and his cheekbones were even more prominent during the day. There was no doubt he was hot. Annoyingly so. And he might have tried to kill me.

“You,” I said as he approached. I watched his reaction carefully.

A flash of surprise crossed his face, but it was quickly replaced by a confident grin.

“Mackenzie, is it? You’ll forgive me. I asked around and found out your name this morning.” He then looked me up and down. “A bit early in the season to go for a swim, I would think, but then I don’t know how you do things in America.”

“Oh, that’s cute. First, you try to drown me, and now, you’re making little quips.”

A cloud of confusion passed over Aksel’s face. “Tried to drown you?”

“Don’t play dumb with me. Do you really think I believe that someone pushed me into the ocean and you just happen to be walking in the same area right after? That this is all just some sort of coincidence?”

“When did this happen?” Aksel’s voice asked, his voice carrying a sharp undertone. “And where, exactly?”

“She doesn’t owe you answers,” Ada chimed in, reaching over and taking my hand protectively.

“Damn right I don’t. What are you doing here, if you claim it wasn’t to try and end me? And why did you want me out of the way? Is it because you really killed Greg?”

Aksel shook his head. “Don’t be ridiculous. I’m out here because one of the reasons I stayed in Cornwall is because of the natural beauty in this area. I thought I’d go for a walk and think about this case. I certainly wasn’t here to do anything to you. I had no idea you were even out here.”

“You’ll forgive me if I don’t believe you,” I said dryly.

Aksel looked me up and down as if realizing for the first time the gravity of the situation. “If you’ve been in the water, you’re going to catch cold. We need to get you warmed up. My van isn’t far. We can take it, and you can get warm. I’ll take you back home.”

An incredulous laugh escaped me while Ada shot him a disbelieving look. “You must be joking. Believe it or not, we aren’t damsels in distress. We’ve got everything covered, and the last person Mack is accepting a ride from is a man she believes to be a suspect in her own attempted murder. Now, if you don’t mind, you’re right that every minute is of the essence, and I’ll be getting her safely where she needs to be.
