Power was in the air, and even if I couldn’t see spirits, I could feel it as it charged everything around us. The hair on the back of my neck stood on edge and it wasn’t from the storm that grew darker the closer we got to Sacramento. “This is what we were warned about,” I said. “What you see is not always the truth. And sometimes the truth is hiding behind a lie.”

“What’s that?” Dane asked from the front seat, and I explained to him that Janis had said that to me the first time we’d met. I didn’t understand it then, but now it made total sense. He dialed Janis’s number again, and all of us waited to see if he got through.

“Still a busy signal. Janis is strong, don’t you think she’d be able to defend herself against Sophia?” Dane asked.

“Maybe if it were actually Sophia, but it’s my mother basically driving her like a tank into a battle. She can use any power at her disposal and she’s not afraid to do it. Believe me when I say she has no morals about hurting anyone.” Bran understood more about witches than any of us, and I trusted him. He was worried about what could happen and we needed to respect that.

The rain turned to hail as the wind picked up and visibility lessened, but still Griff drove on. “What about the witches that kicked her out of their coven? Would they be able to help?” he asked as he clenched the wheel tighter.

Bran explained that witches were not usually interested in anything that had to do with humans. They only wanted them to use them, but I didn’t tell him that. I thought about it a moment more when Dane asked if there was a way to contact them.

“Maybe. I could send Buddy as my familiar. They would accept that, but there’s no way of knowing what their reaction could be, or if they’d allow him to return.”

“What if I could make sure he’d return,” I said. The time had come for me to be completely honest with Bran. He’d proven himself time and again. I could trust him.

“But you can’t possibly do that,” Bran argued. I could feel the fear rolling off him and worry about every decision we’d need to make. I fought the urge to touch him. Finally, I couldn’t stand it anymore and took his hand. His nerves were strung so tight he gripped my hand like a lifeline, and I hated how much of this he was taking on himself.

“I wasn’t completely honest with you about my abilities—I’ve not used this often and always kept it hidden. I can force my spirit out while my body lies dormant. I could accompany Buddy and explain to them what’s happened. If they value their independence like you say, then it would be in their best interest to help.”

“How could you find them?” Dane asked as he turned around in the seat to look at us.
