“Where’s Kim?” Allie asked. “She’s been missing a lot of lunches lately.”

Ezra shrugged. “She’s doing something about college. I don’t know. Don’t care.” He looked up at the theater building. Since Tiffany’s incident, the structure loomed over the campus, casting a wide shadow on the little children. Perhaps next year, once the truth passed into history and history passed into rumor, then that shadow might dissipate.

“Sounds like you guys are doing well,” Allie replied.

“They’ve closed the the theater for the rest of the year,” Ezra said. “What will the drama nerds do now?”

“Eat in the cafeteria. Did you hear anything I just said?”

“Yeah. Kim’s changed. I’ve changed. I used to have fun with her. Now, all she does is mope.”

“Did you guys do it yet?”

“A gentleman never tells.”

“You’re not a gentleman. So tell.”

Ezra swiveled around on the bench. “No. Not a big deal. We wouldn’t have gotten that far anyway.”

“How do you know?”

“Did you hear anything I just said? We’re growing apart.”

“Are you going to break up with her?”

“I don’t know.”

“You should do it before Graduation.”

“Thanks for the romance advice, Miss Lonelyheart.”

“You’re welcome.”

Ezra rolled his eyes. “Let’s talk about something else.”

The problem was they didn’t have anything else to talk about so they sat in silence for the next twenty minutes.

“Later,” Ezra said when the period bell rang.

Allie was already gone. Ezra didn’t notice.
