I went back to my cabin to get Jack. Bobby adored my husband. I’d be more likely to get the truth out of him with Jack by my side.

Bobby’s cabin was one of the most remote on the peninsula. To get there, you had to follow the footpath from our cabin to the road. Then you had to cross down behind the outhouses and follow the winding path to the other side of the peninsula. The cabins on that side of camp were like a different district from ours; the views were different, the cabins were further apart, and they faced the east cove, the one that had the large rock at the end of it.

We knocked on Bobby’s door. It was only 9:30 a.m., so I was surprised when he answered, fully dressed, with a somewhat clean shirt on.

“Look what I found,” I said, and then stepped aside so he could see my husband standing there with a reluctant grin. Jack was annoyed that I’d made him come with me, saying he wanted nothing to do with the whole mess and protesting that we shouldn’t get involved. He was concerned about my safety.

“Jack! My man!” Bobby shook Jack’s hand warmly. “I’d invite you in, but it’s kind of a mess in here right now.” He stepped out in his bare feet.

“No sweat,” Jack replied. “I just wanted to say hello.”

“Are you staying?”

I didn’t know the answer to that question myself. I looked at my husband.

“Well, I’m not leaving my wife when there is a murderer on the loose.”

“Yeah, pretty weird stuff, huh?” He scratched his head as if it would help. “Here, sit down.”

We took a seat at his picnic table, which leaned down the hill a little precariously. I was glad he was sitting on the topside of the hill; it anchored the table. His view of the lake was spectacularly clear and private.

“What do you think happened?” I asked him.

“Hell if I know,” he said, shaking his head.

“Bobby, what were you doing in Emily’s cabin yesterday?” It was a blunt approach, but I couldn’t see how tiptoeing around the question was going to get me any further. I’d known Bobby a long time and felt I could be direct.

“What? I told you yesterday. I was making sure the place was locked.”

I looked at him, head tilted, waiting for the truth. “I didn’t tell the cops I saw you there. Neither did Luanne as far as I know. Just tell me the truth. I mean, you wouldn’t even take her door off because she wasn’t there. It doesn’t make any sense to me that you would go inside a dead woman’s cabin.”

“Lee, I…” He looked to Jack for help, but Jack shrugged in support.

“I don’t think you killed her, Bobby. I just know something is up. I’ve never heard you call anyone a bitch. It’s not like you. Why the intense dislike?”

He shook his head and exhaled deeply. “She was blackmailing me.”

“Blackmailing you? What? How? This is summer camp for God’s sake.
