CHAPTER FIFTEEN
Steele sat in the rigid visitor’s chair staring at his wife. The past three hours of his life seemed like a very bad rerun. A loop that he was starting to fear he would never get out of.
After receiving Eva’s call, he left Flynt with Brightburn and raced to the hospital. According to Eva, she found Jacki lying on the floor gasping for breath. When Eva found that she was unresponsive, she then called an ambulance. While there was no surefire certain story, it appeared that her electric wheelchair had somehow hit the door jam and tossed Jacki to the floor.
When Steele arrived at the hospital, he recognized all of the expressions right away. He was around enough EMTs every week to recognize the look of fear and uncertainty on their faces. Watching the way they spoke and the urgency of their movements, Steele fully expected to lose her at any moment.
But here he was, in her room just three hours later and it did indeed look as if she would pull through one more time. Her doctor, the same doctor that cared for her just over two months ago the last time she was rushed to the hospital, was amazed. He did try to lightheartedly encourage Steele by saying that Jacki was a “real fighter”.
The term fighter was far more encouraging than the other term he was given once he arrived. That term—deep vein thrombosis—scared him quite badly. He knew about it and other blood clot conditions because he spent many sleepless nights reading about the care and health risks of paralytics. Deep vein thrombosis was not a term someone in his shoes ever wanted to hear.
Still, it was the same disheartening report—a report he received over and over since Jacki survived the accident that put her in this state. “She’s pulled through, she’s a fighter, but she needs some time to recuperate.”
It is certainly preferable to “We did everything we could, Mr. Steele, but…”
Steele was not a very religious man, but he slowly got out of his chair and knelt by Jacki’s bed. If forced to choose a side on the God debate, Steele would fall on the believer side. But he would also be quick to point out that just because he believed in an Almighty presence that watched them all from up above, it didn’t mean he cared much for him. Sometimes, Steele thought, God seemed like nothing more than a big spoiled kid, watching ants under a microscope and, on occasion, frying one of them with a magnifying glass and the sun.
He sort of felt that way as he approached Jacki’s hand and squeezed it. He closed his eyes and tried to find the words to pray but they would not come. So, in the end, he simply held his wife’s hand even though she was unaware of his presence. He believed that his spoiled-kid God must see her and decided to remain silent, letting him keep observing under the magnifying glass and hoping he’d decide to spare her.
