An hour later, Cassidy still felt uneasy. More than uneasy. She was disturbed. Anxious.
She just had a really bad feeling about this whole situation.
And what if Gilead was right? What if there was nothing Cassidy could do to stop him? He would soon be the man in charge.
Sure, there was a check-and-balance system in place, but had it ever really been put to the test in Lantern Beach? She doubted it. That laid-back attitude might cost this town its very existence in the end.
As someone knocked at her door, she stood. Agent Fielding waited outside her office.
“We’ve had an agent monitoring the ferry, waiting for Officer Bradshaw to return. He just pulled up to his place, and we’re headed out to arrest him.”
The unease in her stomach continued to grow. Why was Dane back from kiteboarding so early? She hadn’t expected him to return until tonight. “Thanks for letting me know.”
“Do you want to come?”
Did she want to come? Absolutely not.
But Cassidy knew she needed to. Dane was her officer, one of her people.
“Yes, but I’ll drive myself. Just let me grab my keys.”
A few minutes later, she was in her SUV, headed back toward Dane’s place. Part of her felt sorry for Dane—and doubtful that these accusations were true. It just seemed too easy for the seasoned officer to be implicated. He would have been more careful.
But another part of her, when considering that Dane might have done this, was filled with anger. If he was guilty, then he deserved to be locked up for a long time. He’d gone against his oath of office and endangered more than one person.
In fact, someone had died because of this incident, this crime. It was no joke. No, this had been a carefully planned and executed contamination by someone who’d intended to make people sick.
Cassidy parked her SUV behind Fielding and Easton’s FBI sedan. She joined them as they walked up the steps. Inside, Cassidy heard Ranger barking, announcing their arrival.
Dane opened the door before they even knocked. He still wore his wetsuit, and Ranger stood guard beside him.
Dane’s hands went to his hips, and he squinted as he looked at them.
“Chief, what’s going on?” His gaze latched onto hers as a deep burrow formed between his eyes. “My equipment broke, so I’m back early from—”
Before he could even finish his sentence, Fielding began reading Dane his rights and cuffed his hands behind him.
Shock washed over Dane’s features, but he didn’t resist. He only stared at Cassidy, his voice rising. “What? You can’t think I did this? Cassidy, tell them.”
She swallowed hard. “Dane, the evidence . . . I’m sorry.”
“The evidence? There’s no evidence. If there is, it’s because I’ve been set up. I didn’t do this. Tell them, Cassidy.”
She felt helpless as she stood there, watching the agents lead Dane away. He would be kept at her jail tonight.
“Take care of Ranger for me,” he called.
Cassidy nodded and took the dog’s collar. “Come on, boy. You’re going to stay at my place tonight, okay? Kujo will love having you there.
