Chapter 22
I WALKED OFF THE ELEVATOR at Baptist Medical Center and sure enough the same security guard was standing by the nurseâs station, as if he knew Iâd be showing up.
âHi again,â I said. âRemember me?â I gave him a friendly smileâa bit forcedâand handed him my business card. âMind if I go visit Mrs. Kaplan?â
He stared back at me, as if confused. He didnât answer.
âKristen Kaplan?â I said. âSheâs the woman in room three-oh-seven. I was here a couple of days ago, althoughââ
He narrowed his eyes and folded his arms at his chest, as if he finally figured out where he was. âSorry, no visitors right now.â
âSeriously?â I said. âWhyâs that?â I pointed to the sign next to the desk. âItâs still visiting hours.â
He just stared back at me. âVisitors are allowed. Just not visitors for Mrs. Kaplan.â
I turned to the woman behind the desk. âCan someone tell me why? Is she okay?â
The nurse gave the security guard a look and said, âThe Fernandina Beach Police Department has informed us nobody is to visit her until they tell us itâs okay.â
âThey said she canât have visitors? Thatâs ridiculous. They say why?â
The guard looked down at a piece of paper on the clipboard on the small desk next to him. âAre you Henry Walsh?â
I nodded.
âBecause they were pretty specific about not letting you in no matter what.â
I pointed to myself. âMe? Why would they...â I stopped. âCan you at least tell me who specifically told you not to let anyoneâor meâin to see her? Any chance it was an officer by the name of Dale McDonald? Heâs the one who was here the other night when you wouldnât let me back there.â
âNo sir.â
âNo sir, what? No sir it wasnât him? Or no sir, youâre not going to tell me who told you not to let me in?â
The guard was an older man with white hair under his hat. I wasnât about to attack the man, but he wasnât about to give me any ground, either. He mightâve been somewhat frail inside his aging body, but he was close to my height and held his chest out as he stood from the stool beside the desk.
âIâve been instructed to call them if anybody has any problems, or gives me a hard time.â
âIâm not trying to give you a hard time. But Iâd like to see the woman I was in a car accident with. But itâs clear someone believes thatâs asking for too much.â
The guard stepped toward me. âIâm going to have to ask you to leave.â He narrowed his eyes.
The nurse behind the desk stood with her hands at her chest, staring right at me.
I put my hands up, my fingers spread with my palms facing out. âCan you at least tell me her condition? If sheâs improved?â I looked back and forth from the guard to the nurse.
The two exchanged a look.
The nurse said, âSheâs stable.â
âIs she conscious?â
The nurse hesitated a moment, then shook her head. âShe tried to speak.
