Tennyson

Thanks to the miles Ten had walked on the shelling trip and on their own private beach, he’d gotten his first good night’s sleep of the trip. He’d woken up around half past seven when Ezra bounded into the room and jumped into bed, pushing on Ronan’s shoulder and yelling that he was hungry.

Ronan took the little boy downstairs with the promise of pancakes, leaving Ten to have a leisurely shower. As he scrubbed his hair, his mind turned back to River. He hadn’t heard anything back from Barb or River’s lawyer in terms of his bail being secured. Ten would check into that after he’d had a good breakfast.

Ten dressed quickly, shoved his phone in his back pocket, and headed downstairs. Jude was serving up strawberry pancakes while Cope poured syrup, and Kaye followed with orange juice.

“Good morning, Daddy!” Everly said cheerfully. “I can’t wait to meet Brooke today!”

“Who?” Ten asked, searching his mind. “Oh, was she one of the kids you met on the beach yesterday?”

“No, silly. Brooke is my cousin. We’re going to see them today.” Everly sounded absolutely sure of the plan. “I’m so excited I have a cousin of my very own.”

“Here you go.” Ronan set a plate in front of Tennyson. It was loaded with pancakes, bacon, and fresh cut strawberries.

“Did River or Barb call you this morning?” Ten asked when Ronan took a seat beside him.

Ronan shoved a forkful of pancakes in his mouth and shook his head. “No one’s called me. How about you? Did you check your phone after you got out of the shower?”

Now that Ten thought about it, he hadn’t. He reached into his pocket and pulled it out. The phone rang in his hand. River’s name was on the caller ID. “Hey, River.” Ten hit the speaker button so everyone could hear the call.

“I don’t know what you and your friends did, but my bail was secured last night, and I was released this morning. I got home about half an hour ago. The first thing I did was take the longest, hottest shower of my entire life.”

“I’m glad you’re home.” Ten’s gaze drifted to Kaye, who had unshed tears in her eyes. Jude wrapped an arm around her and whispered something in her ear.

“What would you think of coming to see us today?” River asked. “I’d like to tell you about my life and show you the box of things my mother left behind. If it’s possible, I’d love to meet your mother too.”

Kaye’s eyes widened, but she stayed silent.

“Let me have a chat with everyone, and I’ll call you back in a few minutes.” Ten watched Kaye. He hadn’t seen her look this fragile since David died.

“You don’t have to do that, Tennyson,” Kaye said, reaching for a napkin. “I’ll come along. Everly too.”

Jude and Fitzgibbon raised their hands.

“I’m coming too,” Aurora declared. “I want to meet Brooke.”

“Sounds like everyone is coming, River.” Ten laughed.

“Okay, well, I’ll send Barb out for burgers and dogs. We’ll have a little cookout, and the kids can play in the yard or swim in the pool.
