Chapter Thirteen
It wasn’t until six o’clock in the evening that Dan Fermono was taken into custody. I hung up with Scott around two thirty, and immediately headed for the hotel bar. My stomach was in turmoil. I brought the cell phone down to the bar with me, since Scott said he would call me the minute he knew anything.
As it turns out, I didn’t need the phone. Scott and Vinnie both came sauntering into the bar around seven.
“Considering you’re here instead of on the phone, I can only come to the conclusion that something must have gone wrong.” I was slurring my words, and had a very condescending tone. I felt I had every right to sound pissed off. I had come too far, and now the Feds were pulling the rug right out from under me.
“Nice to see you too,” replied Scott, sarcastically. “Been here a while?”
“Too long,” I said. “Listen, I apologize. I shouldn’t be coming down on you. You’ve gone out of your way to help me, and I am grateful. It’s just that I know what does gonna happen, and it’s getting to me, that’s all.”
“I understand. Really, I do. But be thankful that at least he’s off the streets.”
“Oh. I take it then, that Fermono is in custody?” I was just finishing my sixth or seventh beer, and feeling every drop of it.
“Yes. The Feds took him in about an hour ago, but Fermono won’t talk until his attorney shows up. John, that’s my buddy downtown, he tells me that the FBI is stalling. They’re dragging out the booking process, not letting Fermono have his phone call right away. His lawyer won’t have a chance to get him out until bail is set, and since its Friday night, he won’t be arraigned until Monday. He’ll have to cool his heels behind bars for the weekend.”
I shook my head. I think I needed something to eat. That was my plan anyway. I needed something to absorb the alcohol in my body. Then I could continue drinking. At the moment, it sounded like a good plan. I shared my thoughts with Scott. “I gotta get some food in me, Scott. I take it Vinnie came along ‘cause he also has some tidbits of information to share. Let’s all go out for a steak or something, and he can spill his guts over dinner. Then maybe we can have an after dinner drink someplace. Since there really isn’t anything I can do about the Fermono thing tonight, I might as well at least try and enjoy myself.”
Up to that point, Vinnie had been silent. He had ordered a Coors light and was just leaning there on the bar listening to me babble. “Sounds good.” he finally said. “I do have, as you so eloquently put it, some tidbits to share, but I could easily do it over a steak and a baked potato.”
“Fine,” said Scott. “But I’ll drive. I’m the only one here who hasn’t been sucking down brews all day.
