Chapter Ten
Mr Enterkin was at his most avuncular. ‘Don’t bolt your food,’ he said. ‘There’s plenty of time. It’s only just across the road, and Sir Peter’s meeting us here first. The special licence is in my pocket and the ring, I hope, is in yours. So there’s nothing to worry about and no hurry. Nothing to do but to enjoy the occasion. Not,’ he added severely, ‘that I approve of the bride lunching with the groom before the ceremony.’ He tried to frown at Molly but without any real success. She was looking too happy to be frowned at with conviction.
The three of them were lunching at The Willow Tree. Enterkin was revelling in the meal, Molly was enjoying it and Keith was nibbling. ‘I’m not letting her out of my sight again until this is all over,’ Keith said.
Molly’s sigh held a nice balance between a new happiness and an older trouble. ‘What a pity Ronnie couldn’t be here,’ she said.
It would have been the wrong time to contradict. ‘How’s he taking the news?’ Keith asked.
‘Mollified a little,’ Enterkin said. He blinked. ‘No pun intended. He’s not exactly jumping with joy, but he seems to have stopped fulminating for the moment.’ Ronnie Fiddler, in fact, had been specific about the disasters which he prophesied his sister’s marriage would bring down on her head, but Mr Enterkin had too much sense of the occasion to mention them.
‘Couldn’t you get them to let him out for his own sister’s wedding?’ Molly asked.
‘I didn’t try.’ Mr Enterkin filled his mouth with chocolate gâteau, and they waited patiently. ‘We couldn’t risk the possibility that he might lose his head again, and on such an occasion. Think of the possible effect if that came out at the trial.’
‘Think of the possible effect on me,’ Keith said. ‘They mightn’t have been able to pull him off me in time again.’
‘A minor consideration,’ said Enterkin.
‘Can we get married again?’ Molly asked. ‘Properly, I mean, in church. When Ronnie gets out, of course.’
Keith touched her hand. ‘Of course we can,’ he said fondly.
Enterkin cleared his throat. ‘Let’s get back to the matter of seeing that that happy event isn’t too far off. I’d like to know whether you think the police accepted your story, and whether you found out any subsequent history from them.’
‘Why wouldn’t they accept my story? It’s true.’
‘So, I’m led to believe, is that of the unfortunate Mr Fiddler.’
‘I see what you mean. Well, they seemed to accept it. They didn’t ask any trick questions or anything. After all, they’d had a constable clobbered, and I’m told Paisley was found wandering, tearful, penitent and starkers on the Lochy Bridge road, and confirmed as much as he knew which was no more than I got out of him. They found the wrecked car; and the other car, the one that the other man got here in, was reported stolen from near Corriegour and turned up abandoned at Bonnyrigg. Oh yes, and a house was
