On Monday morning, as I stepped into the office, the familiar sights and sounds of the workplace greeted me, but, as always, my mind was elsewhere. Before I could even settle at my desk, Kevin’s voice cut through the air, pulling me back to the present.

“Recovered from your night with Luke?” he asked casually, a hint of what sounded like sarcasm in his tone.

I froze. How did Kevin know Luke had been to our house? Fortunately, Luke hadn’t yet arrived. But before I could formulate a response, Kevin continued. “I rang Kat on Saturday while you were in the garden. She mentioned Luke spent the night with you guys.”

My mind raced. Would he be upset because we didn’t invite him too? He certainly did not appear that way, quite the opposite. More pleased that he knew something I didn’t expect him to. But why hadn’t Kat mentioned it to me?

“What did you call Kat about?” I asked.

“About work, of course,” he replied, as if he found the question utterly ridiculous. Kevin leant back in his chair and folded his arms across his chest, tucking both hands inside. “What else would I be calling about?”

“Why didn’t you contact me if it’s concerning work? And what couldn’t wait until Monday?”

I knew I had to calm down, but as I glanced around the office, the sense of unease that had plagued me returned with a vengeance. It felt as if there was something going on, something I couldn’t quite put my finger on. And try as I might to ignore it, I couldn’t shake the feeling that I was being scrutinised by unseen eyes. But who was watching me? The question swirled around in my mind.

“Hey, Adam,” Kevin replied, his smile tight, lacking any warmth or sincerity. “Chill out, pal.” He unfolded his arms and leant forward, propping his elbows on the desk. “I called to speak to you, but as I say, you weren’t available. So I spoke to Kat instead. I need to leave work before lunch, and I didn’t want to wait until this morning to spring it upon you.”

A flush spread across my cheeks. “Oh, okay,” I stammered. “I had no idea. Sorry.”

Kevin clicked his mouse to bring his monitor back to life. He began tapping at a few keys as I unpacked my laptop. But still he wasn’t quite finished, and he had one last twist of the knife up his sleeve.

“I’m surprised Kat didn’t tell you.” He looked up again, that familiar smirk on his face. “Don’t you two talk to each other?”
