On Monday morning, as I stepped into the office, the familiar sights and sounds of the workplace greeted me, but, as always, my mind was elsewhere. Before I could even settle at my desk, Kevinâs voice cut through the air, pulling me back to the present.
âRecovered from your night with Luke?â he asked casually, a hint of what sounded like sarcasm in his tone.
I froze. How did Kevin know Luke had been to our house? Fortunately, Luke hadnât yet arrived. But before I could formulate a response, Kevin continued. âI rang Kat on Saturday while you were in the garden. She mentioned Luke spent the night with you guys.â
My mind raced. Would he be upset because we didnât invite him too? He certainly did not appear that way, quite the opposite. More pleased that he knew something I didnât expect him to. But why hadnât Kat mentioned it to me?
âWhat did you call Kat about?â I asked.
âAbout work, of course,â he replied, as if he found the question utterly ridiculous. Kevin leant back in his chair and folded his arms across his chest, tucking both hands inside. âWhat else would I be calling about?â
âWhy didnât you contact me if itâs concerning work? And what couldnât wait until Monday?â
I knew I had to calm down, but as I glanced around the office, the sense of unease that had plagued me returned with a vengeance. It felt as if there was something going on, something I couldnât quite put my finger on. And try as I might to ignore it, I couldnât shake the feeling that I was being scrutinised by unseen eyes. But who was watching me? The question swirled around in my mind.
âHey, Adam,â Kevin replied, his smile tight, lacking any warmth or sincerity. âChill out, pal.â He unfolded his arms and leant forward, propping his elbows on the desk. âI called to speak to you, but as I say, you werenât available. So I spoke to Kat instead. I need to leave work before lunch, and I didnât want to wait until this morning to spring it upon you.â
A flush spread across my cheeks. âOh, okay,â I stammered. âI had no idea. Sorry.â
Kevin clicked his mouse to bring his monitor back to life. He began tapping at a few keys as I unpacked my laptop. But still he wasnât quite finished, and he had one last twist of the knife up his sleeve.
âIâm surprised Kat didnât tell you.â He looked up again, that familiar smirk on his face. âDonât you two talk to each other?â
