Chapter 14

Back and Beyond

Terra walked through the door to the Back and Beyond bookstore. Moab’s gem for avid readers. She’d left Moses, hiked back to her Jeep, then gunned it home. Leaving her Jeep parked at her apartment, she’d walked briskly down main street.

The dark must of the small bookstore clouded her. She nodded to the wiry young man behind the counter as he briefly pulled his nose from deep within a tattered paperback. Scanning the store, she quickly found the aisle housing books on flora and fauna. Within moments, she’d found the one she used to own a copy of, filled with photos and detailed descriptions of desert flowers.

She flipped through it, looking for something that resembled the sunflower-and-cream petals of the fresh flower crowns left on the heads of the victims. The hefty bookshelf provided a sturdy support as she leaned back into it. Time passed as she lost herself in the pages, addicted to her need to find an answer.

She flipped a page. There it was. Sunflower-and-cream petals. Acacia.

Staring at the brightly-coloured photo of the bush that sprouted flowers, she dug into the details printed on the adjacent page. This rare plant was native to Death Valley. Not usually found elsewhere.

Death Valley. Just a hop, skip, and a jump away from Ocean Beach where Ria died in the arms of her beloved Peace Ring.

She folded over the corner of the page, snapped the book shut, and headed for the counter.
