Kazuo Takahashi would under normal circumstances use his top aide, Noburo Sugiyama, to handle the day-to-day details of a project in which he knew the principal characters, and more or less trusted them to accomplish what needed to be done.

With the committee, however — no matter he much he trusted Sugiyama, it was Sato upon whom he would bet his life and his fortune. And from the moment he and Key Fujimori decided to go forward with their scheme, Takahashi believed it was a matter of life and death, even his fortune. Only he and Fujimori knew how deeply their businesses were intertwined, and the efforts both had taken to keep such dealings a secret. Takahashi knew that besides Sugiyama, only Sato knew some of the facts, and Sato had even broken off his employment for a time because Takahashi underestimated Sato’s true character. It was because Sato cared for the wellbeing of his friends that he returned to Takahashi’s employment. It was an experience Takahashi would not soon forget.

He knew the gang bosses could cause the type of trouble even he would have to confront, but Takahashi was prepared to spend as much time as necessary in his study waiting to hear from Sato. As for everyone else—they would have to wait.
