AFTER DINNER WAS SERVED, Alex and I stood near the bar and waited for a chance to somehow strike up a conversation with Andrew. He stood next to Jess and I saw him glance over at me, more than once.

Jess turned to me and Alex. “Oh, there you are.” She turned to Andrew. “Andrew, do you know Henry Walsh?”

He shook his head and squinted his eyes. He then turned to Alex and looked her up and down.

Jess said. “And this is Henry’s date, Alex Jepson.”

“Oh, she’s not my date,” I said.

Alex and Jess both gave me a look.

Jess said, “Oh, I’m sorry, I thought...” She tried to keep a smile on her face.

Andrew reached out and shook Alex’s hand then held on to it for a little longer than he should have.

Alex looked down at him. She wasn’t quite six feet tall, but hovered over him. The top of his head came just under her chin.

“So, what brings you two to the gala?” he said.

“We’re just here to support the animals,” I said.

He nodded. “I love the animals myself. That’s why I do what I can to support such a wonderful cause.” He turned and looked toward another banner hung behind the stage where the band was playing. “That’s my company, Bishop Security. We’re the biggest sponsor of this entire gala. He looked at Jess. “Isn’t that right?”

Jess smiled with a nod. “Andrew does so much for the clinic. We couldn’t do any of this without him.”

He put his hand on Jess's back. “I do it for Kate.” He looked down toward the floor for a moment, then raised his glass. “Here’s to Kate.”

I decided to go ahead and play dumb. “Who’s Kate?”

Jess stared at me for a moment, perplexed. She had to’ve wondered why I’d tell Andrew I didn’t know who Kate was when I’d already asked Jess about her.

Andrew had his eyes on Alex’s chest but shifted his eyes to mine. “Kate was my wife. She passed away earlier this year.”

A young woman walked up to Jess and appeared to be in somewhat of a panic. She whispered into her ear.

“I’m so sorry,” Jess said. “I have to take care of something.” But as she started to walk away she grabbed me by the arm. “Can I talk to you for a moment?” She pulled me off to the side. “What are you doing?”

I looked down at my drink and swirled around the ice left in the bottom of my glass. I shrugged. “Just making conversation.”

“Why would you ask Andrew about Kate, when you already know what happened to her? Andrew is an important part of this event. Please don’t cause him any more grief than he’s already been through.” She walked in the direction of the stairs.

I stepped back over to Andrew and Alex. I said, “You know, now that I think about it... I’m pretty sure I knew your wife. But this is back when she was Kate O’Connell. She was the same age as Lance, right? Around twenty-eight? In fact, I believe Lance and Kate went way back.
