Besides losing my mamma, I’d had it pretty good growing up. I’d made friends easily. I had Wade as a built-in backup whenever girl drama became too much. As a good-looking enough kid, no one teased me. With the notable exception of George Meyer, my teachers all liked me, and school came fairly easily. Daddy had been a great father, Bailey was always around, and the moms had practically adopted me. The inn brought new, interesting people around and kept us fed and provided for. Life had not been horrible by any means. With one giant, unavoidable exception.

My relationship with Blaine Blakely.

For as long as I could remember, we had been in one form of social combat or another. At first, we jockeyed for parts in dance recitals and Little League soccer team positions. By junior high, we were fighting for the lead in the school musical and captain of the pep squad. In high school, things turned more hardcore, with scuffles for cheer captain (we shared as co-captains), class president (she won), and prom queen (I won).

And, of course, the epic battle for the affections of Seth Johnson.

Seth had had a crush on her early in junior high. She had actually been his first girlfriend, a fact I enjoyed reminding him of frequently and often. But that early taste of her neurotic insanity proved enough for him to get it out of his system. By high school, he only had eyes for me.

He had lost his mind once more and went out with her again when we were taking a break during our sophomore year, but I always thought he did that more to mess with me than because he actually fancied Blaine. As adults, he wouldn’t dare date her, not only for fear I might make her body disappear, but on general recognition that bossy, neurotic girls tended to grow up into controlling, slightly insane women. Plus, I think he’d come to understand how high-maintenance a woman like Blaine would be long-term.

But those weren’t the biggest strikes against me with Blaine. My affiliation with Wade proved to be the more insurmountable issue between us.

Despite how preposterous either of them would claim it to be, I always secretly thought Wade and Blaine might eventually figure out something on the relationship front that involved more than body thrashing. They shared a kindred ruthlessness of spirit and would produce the most beautiful children ever. And as a full-fledged handsome doctor now, Wade had become quite a prize, despite the situation with his moms. Blaine liked to collect prizes.

They had dated a few times since high school, although Wade firmly denied they’d ever done the deed. I’m not sure I believed him, but he’d usually be quick to offer details of his conquests.

But something changed between them this spring. I don’t know what happened, but the spring her granddaddy died, something got Wade seriously hot under the collar. Blaine’s granddaddy had been town mayor since we’d all been born. When he finally
