‘Maybe one day I’ll rate a capital letter kiss.’ She glanced up and Clegg was beckoning. The office was in flux. Shona squeezed through Milhurst and his NCA oppos as they boxed up files.

‘Better if they’re based in the main headquarters building,’ Clegg explained. ‘Only cause friction mingling with the team here.’

‘Ma’am,’ Shona sensed that Clegg recognised the resentment in her voice and lifted her tone. ‘Only natural. Can see it’s for the best.’

Clegg relaxed a little.

‘Family appreciated the presence this morning,’ Shona moved things on. ‘All those hairy-arsed coppers with bandanas around their heads. Looked like extras from Pirates of the Caribbean.’

There were a couple more minutes of inconsequential information and Shona chattily repairing her earlier resentment. Then Clegg’s phone rang.

Shona walked into the corridor, ducked into the small windowless room and took out her mobile. She tapped Jamie, and it rang out. But then he spoke.

‘Sorry, didn’t hear it at first. This bus is noisy and the road’s full of potholes.’

‘I’ve seen Clegg.’

‘Wha…?’ Jamie’s voice fought against the background noise. ‘Sorry. Got on one stop before the bloody high school. It’s me and about ten thousand self-obsessed teenagers.’

Shona smirked at the thought. ‘Okay. Look, I’ll come round later. I’m on shift till five, but I’ll go home first.’
