pizza farms
Yep, thatâs right. Pizza. Farm. What is it? A delicious trend unique to this area. Owners of three working farms stoke fires in brick ovens during the warm season. The savory aroma of bubbling cheese, crisp crust, spicy meats, basil, and roasted tomatoes wafts across fresh-cut fields and a happy lineup of customers who find their way into the coulees, up in the bluffs, and down gravel roads.
Prices typically run $16 to $24 per pizza. Most pizza farms only take cash, and you may have to wait a few hours for your food. Fortunately, the experience is about more than just eating: itâs about paying homage to the local harvest, saying hello to the livestock, listening to music (either planned or spontaneous), and celebrating the countryside and camaraderie. Most of all, itâs a chance to let passionate farmers and bakers work their magic.
A to Z BakeryâThe Pizza Farm. N2956 Anker Ln., Stockholm; (715) 448-4802; www.atozproduceandbakery.com. Decorative lights and pots of herbs add to the atmosphere here where everything comes from their farm, including the sausage, bacon and pepperoni, grains, and a rainbow of heirloom vegetables from eggplants to exotic peppers. Theyâve been serving pizza and baking sourdough bread here for more than a decade, letting whatâs ripe dictate the weekly menu. Bring your own blanket or table and chairs, utensils and napkins, and drinks. All garbage (including the pizza box) must go with when you leave. Open 4:30 to 8 p.m. Tues mid-Mar through Thanksgiving.
