where to eat

Cowiche Canyon Kitchen. 202 E. Yakima Ave., Yakima; (509) 457-2007; cowichecanyon.com. A large, modern eatery near the historic district, this restaurant serves American fare with style. Local produce and beverages as well as the bustling atmosphere all shine. Open daily for lunch and dinner. $$–$$$.

Essencia Artisan Bakery. 4 N. Third St., Yakima; (509) 575-5570. Off the main drag, Essencia serves light lunches and freshly baked goodies. The artisan bakery is open Mon to Sat for breakfast, coffee, and lunch; also open Sun when there’s the downtown farmers’ market. $–$$.

Santiago’s. 111 E. Yakima Ave., Yakima; (509) 453-1644; santiagos.biz. Santiago’s serves Mexican favorites, with specials often featuring what’s in season in the Yakima Valley. Tacos, burritos, enchiladas, tamales, and chile rellenos are all on the menu, but so is a local-inspired Yakima-apple pork mole. Open Mon to Fri for lunch, Mon to Sat for dinner. $$–$$$.
