As her family looked about in shock, Ella snapped a picture. She could see in her mind’s eye what the photo would look like. It would look like the end of the world.

“See, Daddy? It was a cyclone!”

Dazed, they all walked down the road. Victoria Park was a wreck. Knox Presbyterian Church, built of stone and meant to last forever, was gutted. The interior was gone, the great stained glass windows lying in pieces on the ground. A wall was gone, torn apart stone by stone, and two turrets were missing. Outside, one of the trees around the church had been stripped bare of leaves and bark, but the others looked perfectly all right. How could that be?

“This was no cyclone,” Mr. Barclay said, shaking his head. “They don’t cause this much damage. It was a tornado, Ella. Much, much worse than a cyclone.”

The ymca was missing its roof and most of the outside walls around the top floor. Ella could see right into the upper dormitories. She angled her camera up and pushed the button. What had happened to the people who lived in those rooms?
