Chapter Fourteen

Since I have time to wait on Rowan’s message, I decide to keep digging on my own and, rather than poke around at my client’s office instead turn my attention to Dynamic Creative. After all, the head of the IT department was at the scene of the crime last night and as a computer programmer, isn’t he a perfect choice to ask questions about a hacker? While suspecting Phil Vinch of that very role?

Maybe I’m jumping to conclusions others might not, but I can’t abide a coincidence and loose ends give me hives. Especially since Rowan admitted to me that Vinch didn’t have a satisfactory reason for his presence last night. Could he be the mysterious Scourge? Did Hank catch him in the act, maybe try to blackmail him? I know Rowan is pursuing the inquiry, but I’m eager to ask my own questions.

Even if Phil Vinch isn’t the Scourge, he might be able to find out who is. Either way, I’ll be serving my client, if outside the original parameters of my contract.

Well, he’d just owe Fleming Investigations more money and hopefully be grateful for the assist. Either way, I simply can’t let this go until I find out all I can.

Fee really has been an influence on me, but I’ll let you decide if bad or good because I know which one I choose.

Dimple.

The young woman at the front desk doesn’t hesitate to usher me to the elevator, though I’m surprised by that. Maybe Baxter Whitlow failed to inform his employee I’m not who I presented myself to be the day before. Or maybe he has nothing to hide, though I doubt that’s true. Whatever the case, I’m heading for his office within moments, and no one tries to stop me until I’m at his door with one hand raised to knock.

I hear voices inside and pause to listen in, catching Kara Rodus’s angry tone before I make out her words.

“You don’t understand,” she’s saying. “It’s not like that. I was looking out for your best interest, I swear.”

“We’ll talk about this later.” Baxter sounds angry, footsteps approaching the door. I pull back as it jerks wide, Kara practically thrust through it and almost running into me on the way out.

She glares at me, shaking and pale, not a stich of makeup left around her eyes, her dark bob a mess, suit rumpled. But she doesn’t say anything to me, hustling away, head down, while I watch her go. When I turn back, I find Baxter Whitlow observing me with a faint frown on his handsome face. That’s why I’m surprised when he steps away and gestures for me to enter his office.

Should I be nervous? I square my shoulders and accept the invitation because surely the man won’t do anything untoward in the middle of the day in his own office.

“Well played, Ms. Bruce.” He closes the door behind me, crossing to his desk. No more the charming and dashing gentleman, he sits in his office
