Soá¹Ä
The foremost of those nuns who overcome outside practitioners and establish them in the right teaching is the nun called Soá¹Ä.291
THE REFERENCE TO outside practitioners intends those who are âoutsideâ of the Buddhist dispensation. An example is a recurrent reference to six well-known teachers who were contemporaries of the Buddha, already mentioned briefly earlier (see above p. 76). The tale to be taken up below indeed shows Soá¹Ä overcoming them, although apparently not to the extent of actually establishing them in the right teaching. Soá¹Ä also features in the corresponding listing in the Aá¹ guttaranikÄya, which instead reckons her outstanding in the arousal of energy.292 Although this is probably meant predominantly in the sense of dedication to the path of practice, a relationship to the EkottarikÄgama presentation could be established by noting that to debate with outsiders and successfully establish them in the right teaching can safely be expected to require a sustained dedication of energy.
